Ratings and Reviews
I actually use this app as a notebook, not a journal, and it provides a better alternative to many writing apps since I have control over the fonts, colors, inserting pictures in the text, and iCloud Sync (best of all). So far the only (mildly annoying) problem I have is the inability to delete the pre-installed notes (introduction and instructions). The most recent update introduced Zee; while some users may find this entertaining I really like to have the option to diable it or even delete it (I hope to have this option in the next update). It would be nice also if the app could use the share extension, so I can send notes and paragraphs from various other apps and webpages to Lifecraft. Finally, in the preferences, under Zee, when I click on “instructions” the web browser launches and I am asked to sign in with my email and password. Not sure what this mean yet, but perhaps the first step toward moving away from iCloud in the future which makes me reluctant to rely on this app. Unlike others, I don't mind the subscription model from developers committed to the Apple ecosystem and iCloud support.
Much Better Than Day One
I have been journaling electronically since before the first iPad arrived on the scence. My “goto" program for years was Day One (Classic Version). I loved the intuitive interface. When the update came out for the 2nd version of Day One, I was completely disappointed with the changes. I spent more time trying to figure out how to fix my program than I did writing. It was a constant source of frustration. I moved back to pen and paper. Then, I found this little gem on the app store one evening while I was browsing for a possible replacement program. It works. It works great. It’s reliable, intuitive, and made for journaling. I would happily throw money at the programmers to keep this baby in development. This is a diamond in the raw. I can see tons of possiblities with just a few additions to features. As it stands, it gets the job done in a pleasurable way. Try it.
*Note to development
Don’t make the same mistakes Day One made. Don’t overdevelop. Or develop too fast. Take your time to do it right.
I was hoping for a Day One replacement but…..
I had high hopes for this upon initial install. It had everything I wanted for a reasonable price (compared to Day One) and video support. Unfortunately all it took was a few minutes of tinkering to dash those hopes. For starters, how is there no context menu or track pad slide support for anything on the MacOS version? The only option to delete an entry is to drag and drop into the trash. Okay, it took me a minute to figure that out but I’ll let it slide. Then, after importing Journals from Day One, I realized I no longer needed some of them. I proceeded to delete those as well. But wait, no drag and drop (the method mentioned above) No context menu? That’s right, you have to highlight the journal and hit delete. Where’s the consistency? I was willing to forgive these minor gripes cause I assumed this was a new app. Nope! It’s been around for almost a year. I mean this is UX 101.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
