Split View & Slide Over Support for iPad Pro

Putting myself in LinkedIn’s shoes for a moment . . . I assume that the app is not the greatest value driver at LinkedIn, and I assume that priorities have shifted somewhat since the Microsoft acquisition to focus more on adding value to across the Microsoft ecosystem with newly available LinkedIn data, and I am confident that LinkedIn (and Microsoft for that matter) will eventually get around to producing “pro” apps for iOS enterprise license holders at some point (html signatures in Outlook?).

My review here, therefore, should not be construed as a “complaint,” but rather as an expression of “disappointment”—when you ask a customer to pay $60-$120 per month for a premium service, you expect a premium (read: “efficient”) experience. Many professionals use iPads to do real work, and some portion of those professionals are among LinkedIn’s premium customers. Ensuring that your app is ready to take advantage of the latest features made available by the platform (iOS) utilized by a majority of your premium customers is the minimum LinkedIn should be doing to express its appreciation for this group—doing so would require minimal time and resources. Apps published by children have this feature; therefore, it seems reasonable to expect apps published by Silicon Valley Unicorns to be at least one order of magnitude more polished, modern, and efficient.

Premium is a waste of money

I’ve used LinkedIn for years, but only ever had the usual free account. It served the purpose, put myself out there. Now fast forward to today, I’m on LinkedIn more often as I search for my next career opportunity. Still a free account, I saw the attention I was getting when applying, how often I was coming up in searches. I went ahead and got the Premium, but noticed no change in my stats that indicate it is worth the money.

On a free account I would appear about 30 times a week in searches. With Premium, still 30 times a week. Knowing where I rank compared to every one else and how my skills stack up to the posted position does not add a lot of value. Nice to know, but not for $30 a month. On a side note, even when I was 10/10 on skills I still got one of those “Sorry, we are perusing others...”. So the value of knowing where you stand isn’t high.

Now to the app, there are 2 things I like. The job search feature is easy to use, and great that it saves previous criteria. I also like how each tab works independently. So my homepage is where I left it, jobs page is where I left it and I can go back and forth while keeping my place. Might not seem like a big deal, until you don’t have something similar.
