Phenomenal Game that Inhibits Itself
This game is great! Super fun turn based combat. Amazing visuals and graphics. Carefully thought out champions and abilities. However, obviously very pay to win. That is understandable considering the developers must make money somehow, but many aspects of the game are limited to waiting for timers to end. For example, waiting for more loot tokens, waiting for quests to finish, watching for new goals to get coins, etc. It gets to the point where any additional battle reaps no rewards. If you want to make a fun game, you shouldn’t limit the amount people are allowed to play.
The market place is fine, it’s okay to have an app that is pay to win. That’s how developers make a living. However, there should be ways to achieve things you want without having to pay for them. Look at games like Warframe which has allowed players to play however long they want to farm, but also have the option to pay for the things they need to farm. When a game doesn’t allow me to farm even for coins, that is an issue. The market place can stay, but the addition of some sort of endless wave mode that would allow for players to earn coins independent of crowns and wait times would make this a top tier game. This would help eradicate any sort of halt in progress, and have players keep coming back.
Buggy and beautiful with some design flaws
It's one of the best looking mobile games out there with overall fantastic production value from the art, to the voice acting, to the animations, and beyond. However, it does have its fair share of bugs and design flaws. Though it does not crash frequently, it crashes enough to make you irritated. Occasionally, when you move to the next stage one of the characters from your party completely disappears. They can have full health and not be affected by any conditions and then as the characters walk over to the next stage...poof! They're gone and you're screwed. The second biggest design flaw in the game is how remarkably poor the energy management system is. As a free-to-play player, this is not a game that you can play longer than 30 minutes at a time before you run out of stamina and need to wait hours to replenish. Related to this, the biggest design flaw of this game is how incredibly in your face obvious it is that you need to pay to advance following the third chapter. While it's possible to slowly advance through the 4th chapter and beyond, you'd truly have to grind which is difficult to begin with due to the poor energy system. Besides these glaring issues, it's a fantastic game.
The gameplay and design are really quite beautiful, but there are so many manipulative cash grabs it isn’t worth it. First, the “loot tokens” system is a transparent attempt to entice microtransactions. This is one of those games I gladly would have paid up front for, but the way they keep trying to force in app purchases just to progress has really turned me off to the whole game. Additionally, after the 4th zone the difficulty jumps dramatically to the point where I truly believe it impossible to beat even on easy...without spending real money for heroes better than any you can otherwise get. I’ve spent hours buying dozens of silver keys for 3000 gold and leveling up the best heroes I was given and I’m still ~100 power short of being on even footing. The upgrade costs to unlock heroes skills or raise their rarity are quite high too, considering even when you do have the tokens to replay, you get at most 140 gold for a run through, and skills are 2-8k to unlock. Not to mention the arena system matches you with players radically stronger than yourself - another attempt to get you to pay to win. Really sad to see a game with this much potential ruined in this way. On a technical note, a way should be added to hide or remove heroes you don’t want; the heroes page can feel quite cluttered with weak heroes you have no use for after a while
