The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) is a liturgical addition (or replacement) of the Divine Office, or Liturgy of the Hours. These prayers are said by many religious communities, secular Third Order members, and many other souls devoted to Our Lady. This traditional Office is presented in English and Latin, and notifications can be set for each hour.

There’s a reason why the word “but” is in so many review titles...

In the screen shot preview, the Matins prayers are properly listed first, as the Office of Readings, and all other hours are properly labeled likewise. In the screen shot, one could safely presume that tapping Sext leads where one expects to go.

The actual app doesn’t work like that and I would rather have my dollar back given that this is something so basic to get right. On my app currently as I tap, Non is listed as the Office of Readings, first on the list after the opening/closing prayers, Vespers is listed as Morning Prayer, Sext as the First Hour, Lauds as the Mid-Morning, Prime as Mid-Day, Matins2 (yes, formatted just like that,) as Mid-afternoon, Matins3 as Evening Prayer, and Matins1 as Night Prayer. And no, Matins1 isn’t Compline; it starts like Matins at Midnight or sunrise does. That literally makes no sense! The app also doesn’t remember your Latin/English preference and reverts to Latin on every launch.

I know the app is only $0.99, but it’s a lot of gall to charge at all for something so slipshod.

Good Start But Has a Few Errors

Overall, it's a good app. Below are my three observations.

POSITIVE: It's wonderful to have a simple app to be able to use to recite the Little Office of the BVM. I've only been using the app for a few days so far, and have loved it's functionality.

POSSIBLE CONFUSION or ERROR: It would be good for the app developer to explicitly state which Little Office psalter version is used for the app. I'm used to the Little Office as published by Benziger Brothers in 1904. This app almost matches, but is missing Psalms 66, 149, and 150 in Lauds. That may just be because the app developer is using a different psalter for the Little Office than I'm used to, since some psalters don't include those three psalms for Lauds (but the majority do).

ERROR: In Matins, the app is displaying the wrong Psalms for the given day, and don't match any psalter for the Little Office in existence. That is probably a programing error and needs to be fixed.

Used to love this but...

I used to love this app, finding it more convenient than using the book, but when I updated my phone to a x, this app was all messed up. Terce and None are missing and Matins is repeated 3 times. Plus the hour headings and the descriptions no longer match up—for example, Matins with evening prayer. I really wish someone would fix this because it was a great app. Now I have to go back to the book.
