Editors’ Notes

True to its name, this gorgeous dictionary defines words in style. With a single search, you can find definitions, synonyms, etymologies, and more. It’s the brainchild of two Delhi-based brothers, Vidit and Mudit Bhargava, who handle the coding and design while their father takes care of the business side.

Very much enjoy!

I very much like this app, makes learning words more enjoyable, and I enjoy the colorful illustrations. I wish there was a built-in thesaurus, though, so I can see antonyms in addition to synonyms, which also unfortunately are not included with all words. I contacted the developer to see if he has any plans to add a thesaurus, and he replied back within a day to say that he’s definitely looking into the possibility of adding antonyms to LookUp, although it’s not on the immediate roadmap.

All looks, poor content.

If the purpose of the developers is to sell this app to some solid lexicography content provider (Oxford Press, Merriam Webster, Random House, American Heritage), then they have a potential winner in their hands. Google itself would do well in purchasing this gorgeous interface.

However, for the rest of us, for whom interface is only support for content, this app delivers very little. The gorgeous interface is like a beautiful façade without much behind it.

Many of the words LookUp highlights of its own accord in “Discover More” cannot be found in its database when you tap to expand them. And, sorry to say, a dictionary is only as good as its database.

Developer Response

Hi! We've updated the app to perform better. The problem with the words not appearing in the database was because a bug from our side, which we've corrected in the updates that followed.

We'd love to hear your feedback on the new version of the app!
