Buyer Beware

***Update to Original Review****

As mentioned below, you can not use Luminar as a plugin if you purchase from the App Store. I contacted customer service and they were extremely quick to resolve the issue by provding me the version of the applcation that will allow the use of a plugin. VERY Quick customer service (thank you Julia). As stated below, the software is great and I cannot wait to try out all of the features.

Original review:
I like the application but please be advised that if you purchase the application through the App Store, you will loose the ability to install Luminar 2018 as a plug-in for Lightroom, Photshop etc. You can only install the plug-in if you purchase from the MacPhun site. Wouldn’t normally be a big deal however, since a library or catalog option is not available in Luminar (yet) you have to export the photos then open them in Luminar then reimport them into Lightroom. Can be a bit frustrating doing this over and over again. Not cool. I only wish I knew this before I purchased the software through the App Store.

On the positive side, the application does what it says and does it beautifully! I like all the presets and the LUTs features (I am new to LUTs) have to offter to bring my photo processing to the next level.

Lots of filters. Somewhat slow.

In the beginning, I was excited to use this app because of the amount of filters included. Especially the “sunrays” filter, it’s really amazing. However, when I try to use the most common filters, the application process is a bit slow. There’s always the “Image processing” pop-up displayed. (Note: I do have an iMac Pro, 4Ghz, with 32Gb RAM, and I use Photoshop and Lightroom with no issues). In addition, I can't use the “option” key when selecting the shadows and higlights to avoid clipping, eventhough I saw a video online where you could, just like in Adobe Lightroom.

I purchase this App with the idea of replacing Adobe Lightroom.
Although this app has a lot of great features, I’m going to hold on to Lightroom. Hope that updates in the future will encourage me to switch.

I e-mailed MacPhun with the “options” key issue, and all I got was an automated e-mail reply instructing me to research their website. I did the research with no answer.
I will give MacPhun customer care a one star.

Developer Response

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! Could you please be more specific regarding the filters that seem to be slow? Does it happen with all images or particular ones? Make sure you're using the latest version of the app. Every single question we receive gets answered within 24 hours. Would you be so kind to re-send your request to Thank you in advance.

After all the hype I’ve seen around this app I jumped at it in the hopes of being able to cancel my Adobe subscription and have a one-time purchase app.

While the filters are easy to use, I have 2 major problems that cause me to stop using the app

-Limited to single-image editing / no cataloging
Huge miss. Its a major chore to go through all my photos in finder in order to edit these. Sure, there is a Photos extension, but that means all my RAW photos are uploaded into iCloud and eat up tons of space. No thanks.

-In general, app is slow.
I haven’t seen this many progress bars since Windows Vista. Opening the photos is fine, but any sort of processing brings progress bars and beach balls. This is on a 2017 iMac 5k, so I highly doubt my system is the issue.

If you are hoping to replace any app with this one, I’d steer clear at this point. Maybe in the future they will put in some optimizations and cataloging functionality.

Developer Response

A supercharged DAM platform is still in the works and will be released later in 2018 as a FREE update. Regarding the speed issue, please send us your Mac info and original RAW sample at Thanks in advance!
