Luminos brings the excitement of the universe to you with beautifully rendered views of the night sky. Instantly zoom in to high-definition views of the planets and moons with a few taps on the screen. Hold Luminos up against the sky and it will effortlessly guide you to find any star or planet. Then, let Luminos entertain you with stories on the history, knowledge and mythology of your favorite planets, moons and stars.
When you're ready to go even further, Luminos will be ready with you. Detailed data on every object is easily available within Luminos, even without an Internet connection. If you're fortunate enough to have a computer-controllable telescope then Luminos can command it for you to find objects quickly and easily. Powerful planning tools help you make the most of your evenings by showing you exactly what will be visible tonight or any night in the future.
Whether you want to admire ancient constellations, watch satellites soaring overhead, find out what that brilliant dot is on the horizon, watch eclipses, travel through time, identify craters on the moon, fly through space, watch the solar system in motion from high above, or see the multitudes of asteroids orbiting perilously close to our planet, Luminos makes it all easy and fun.
Instead of buying many apps to get all of these features, Luminos includes everything in one low price. There are no in-app purchases to nibble away at your wallet and there's no advertising to distract you from views of the heavens. Get out there and start exploring!
What's New in Version 8.1
Along with many bug fixes, we've added a few new features for this release. Thanks for your support!
* Luminos now uses the Revised Edition of the New General Catalog and Index Catalog, the most accurate and complete version of the NGC/IC.
* A catalog of popular asterisms has been added to the "Stars and Constellations" section, with descriptions and figures for the sky view.
* Terrain now uses an atmospheric lighting model for an even more realistic appearance.
This is a correction to my previous comment about the "poor quality image" of the version of Luminos 8. After writing my review I contacted the software developers and in a practically instant email response with extremely easy to follow instructions I was able to adjust the new Luminos to the same image quality as the previous version. My hats off to the developers and their quick attention to the users.
I have used a number of planateria for both Apple products and the computer. In all the 25 or 30 I have worked with, three have floated to the top of all the rest. One is for a computer, the other two are for my iToys, as I call the numerous Apple units I have. Of those two, one is LUMINOUS. Without doubt, it has everything I want in this type of program. It is unbelievable in its versatility. An example is its ability to find things by either RA and DEC or by Alt and Az.
The screen is not cluttered so as to block another feature. The brighter stars and their names permit the scoper an easy time to find several alignment stars.
Whatever the price of this app, it is more than worth the price.
Hence, 5 stars
This is the most amazing astronomy program I've seen. And I've been using them since the 80s. How it can make an iPhone accurately track literally 1000s of satellites, comets, and asteroids in real time is unreal! Excellent program! I wish I could use it on my iMac.
