Attractive & Fun Puzzle Adventure
I found this game a bit frustrating initially due to the simple but minimally explained interface. Once I began to get the hang of how things work I was able to appreciate Machinarium as an addictive puzzle adventure with beautiful graphics and an endearing sense of humor.
Tip: If you click the icon in the upper right of the screen it brings up a locked book with a built in side-scrolling game. Navigate the flying key (which can also shoot, using the middle button) past the deadly spiders to unlock the book and view a sketchy storyboard-style explanation of how to defeat the level you're on. Note: this will tell you exactly how to solve all the puzzles in the level, which can take the fun out of exploring the environment and figuring things out on your own, so only use it when you get stuck. It's a good idea to snap a screen capture of the storyboard for later reference so you don't have to beat the spiders again to reopen the book later.
I rate this 4 stars. It would get the 5th star if the player were better introduced to the game mechanics in the beginning, and if the storyboard walkthrough could be used in steps to get you progressively closer to the solution without giving everything away on one page.
Many fixes to be made...
Well, I must admit the game does have superior art and music, and the gameplay is very interesting. That is, when possible. If you do happen to do something out of order in game, you will not be able to fix it and be forced to restart. And occasionally, certain aspects simply will not work no matter how much they are tried. So, for me anyway, the game cannot be finished. Not due to me not doing the right things, but that the right things are not happening. Such as trying to shake a sunflower and nothing happening, despite doing everything on that level's requirements in order and even looking for instructions from a video. Many of the processes in the game are very far too meticulous. Anyone who has given a five star review has probably played the computer version (less glitchy), liked it, and downloaded this, immediately reviewing it well. There are a number of fixes to be made, and I am unable to complete the game, I have restarted the game over 8 times and still cannot pass the aforementioned level. Fix it. Dissapointed.
Fantastic puzzle game reminiscent of Myst and the Room
This is a high quality puzzle game full of personality. The puzzles were pretty intricate, requiring ingenuity to figure out. Interspersed were fun games and easier problems, so i kept moving forward at a nice pace. Very rarely did I get stuck, and their hint system was nice and didn't give too much away. One of the puzzles was a bit obscure, but I prefer that to something that's too easy. The music and animation were fantastic throughout, making the while experience really fun. I love games like Myst and the Room, this is right up there with them in terms of quality and enjoyment.
I didn't run into any bugs or crashes on my ipad.
I can't wait to see what Amanita does next!
