What's New in Version 2.3.1

We've been working hard to make the Mango app easier to use for learners who are visually impaired, learners who are deaf, and learners with disabilities. This means that we've increased color contrast and font sizes, and improved VoiceOver support. We've also added subtitles for the lesson narrator, so that you don't need audio to be able to use Mango to its fullest extent! The subtitles can be turned off in the course settings. The Mango app is now WCAG 2.0 compliant.

Of course, we have also made countless minor improvements and fixed bugs. If you've had to log in to the app more than usual, we've fixed that! If auto play wasn't auto-playing, we fixed that as well. The latest update introduced a crash on iOS 7, we've fixed that too!

To all of our awesome language learners, keep up the great work!

Great for improving fluency

I downloaded mango because I wanted to learn Russian and duolingo didn't have that language at the time. I started from the beginning with Russian and really liked the dialogue aspect of the lessons. It is great for learning how to speak conversationally which was my main goal. I have been learning Russian on a semi regular basis for about three months now and I feel comfortable having a basic conversation with a native Russian speaker. The downside is you don't learn the alphabet so I've been working to piece together reading Russian.

At the same time, I had taken 3 years of Arabic and 1 year of Spanish and wanted to find ways to keep those languages fresh and improve if possible. I found mango to be a great resource here and really helped build especially upon my Spanish lessons on duolingo. After saying I'm a penguin for the tenth time on duolingo, I was really looking to find opportunities to practice more useful sentences, and mango was the solution.

In summary,
Pros: learn useful sentences, builds fluency, TONS of languages (including dialect which is useful for my Egyptian Arabic), manageable lesson sizes/ content
Cons: difficult to learn how to read and write (especially relevant for languages that don't use the English alphabet)

Phenomenal Fluency

This is a stupendous program! I have always had a desire to learn at least one other language, and mango languages has done a fine job of providing me with a more-than-foundational understanding of them. This program has lessons for a myriad of languages, both common like Spanish, to more esoteric ones like Ancient Greek or even Cherokee.

My favorite part of the program is its interactivity. Whenever mango displays text in another language, one must simply hold his finger upon the desired word to see the phonetic spelling of the word coupled with a more enunciated word.

This is a great program which I highly recommend. Not to mention, many libraries offer free memberships with a card. A fine program which I would have paid for had I not been given a complementary account!

Tons of languages, lack of vocabulary per subject

I downloaded this app because I saw it on my libraries home page. I've previously used Duolingo and Rosetta Stone but the languages they offer are very limited. So, when I saw the entire list of languages Mango had I was beyond excited. Unfortunately, that excitement was short lived. Mangos lessons are focused on one conversation and explain why it works for 10 mins. I may be spoiled by the immersion type software where there are no English explanations and you solely rely picture and intuition. The other draw back would have to be is lack of variety when being tested on vocabulary words. Speech recognition would be helpful as as a word-meaning match.

Yet if traditional conversational learning is for you this app may be great. I still have hope for this app because of the amount of languages offered.
