Excellent maps, but...
In full disclosure, I have only tried this app one time in a live trip in city driving with some relatively close turns. While the maps, routing, and ease of selecting alternate routes are all exceptional, the voice turn by turn directions seem to be a bit slow resulting in already being at a street you should turn on (possibly in the wrong lane) before the voice instructions tell you this is where you need to turn. In a more open setting where turns are not 1/4 mile or less apart, it seems to function much better. In summary, I like this app better than Google or VZ Navigator for all features EXCEPT voice turn by turn. I still think VZ Navigator has the advantage in that area...especially in close proximity turns in city driving!
What a disappointment.
I used to rely on MapQuest app, especially appreciate its 3-staged turn direction that executes better than many other apps and dedicated navigators. Also liked its walking voice direction very much. But as its map really sucked and stale traffic data was close to useless, I stopped using it.
The new interface looks a lot crisper. Along with the other promised improvements, I was willing to give it another try.
However, its ads placement is way too intrusive on the screen compared to other ad-supported navigation aps such as Waze. And voice commercials? That's a terrible distraction to the degree of safety hazard.
Additionally, though MapQuest Mobile still has the accurate 3-staged turn signal timing, wording in each stage is no longer as distinct.
One more thing, you have to click two buttons every time you restart MapQuest in order to see traffic layer. How does one think of so awkward a design?
Excellent for route planning
I use this app along with the website to plan my routes everyday. The one thing I think is needed is for it to ask if you are ready to go to next location, or a least bring the pause feature back. Without this the map will keep giving directions to the next stop and if you are in a parking lot or park behind the location, and you are not going the way it wants you to go it will remove the next stop, which forces you to restart the process over again. But overall I love what it offers and it truly saves me a ton of time on the road.
