Your Best Option

I've been saying it for months now: Marvin is the best epub reader available, and it just keeps getting better. I spend about five hours a day on average reading books, so I need an app that can hold a lot of books (I currently have over a thousand), keep them organized, provide a space for metadata and storyline summaries, show covers, allow me to take notes, look up words in a dictionary of my choosing, save new vocab, rate books using the same 5 star system used by Goodreads, translate words and phrases in different languages, allow integration with Dropbox, and so much more. Marvin has all of these features and more. If you've been looking for a good e-reader, don't waste anymore of your time. This is the best.

A raity in this space: an app with excellent design

My experience with e-book programs was limited to the Kindle app and iBooks. Both programs are serviceable, but set a low bar.

After using those, I've been very pleasantly surprised by Marvin. It just *feels* nice to use. It's a little hard to identify exactly why that's so, but in the case of Marvin I think that's a sign of good design. It gets out of the way, but it also just feels nice to use. In my experience good design like that is rare.

And that may get at part of why I like the app. One of the things you give up with e-books vs physical books is that sense of design, that sense of holding something in your hand that someone put some thought into.

Marvin can't make up for all the limitations of the epub format in terms of allowing that uniqueness of design to come through, but it's like having a leather book cover that you move from book to book. It just feels nice to open.

Reigning ebook reader champ

I’ve been reading ebooks since around 2003 and this is the best mobile app I have ever used. I wish all apps were as good as Marvin. The integration with Calibre/OPDS feeds is excellent and I’ve not found a single epub that doesn’t work well. The author is incredibly responsive to user requests and there is even a github setup where users can add feature requests and other users can provide input. Many of Marvin’s great features originated from community requests.
