The tai chi sword known as “jian” is a straight sword with a double-edged blade, considered by many the ‘king’ of Chinese martial arts weapons. It has evolved over the last 2500 years or so from early ones made of bronze to the more sophisticated carbon steel swords of today. Renowned throughout history as a deadly close combat weapon, the wielder of a tai chi sword would have been considered a great warrior in battle.
Today the jian is commonly used within a tai chi form for the development and harmony of the mind, body, and spirit. It can be a wonderful addition to your tai chi and is considered an advanced form of training. It is also an excellent way to extend your knowledge and can give extra insight into the history of Chinese martial arts.
You would need to have mastered some basic tai chi forms before including the sword in your practice. Great care should be taken to avoid injury to yourself or others, a wooden practice sword can be used until comfortable in handling a sword.
When you are not using your tai chi sword it can look beautiful when on display in the home, and make a great centrepiece perhaps above a fireplace. It can add great atmosphere to any room, is sure to impress your guests, and can often end up being the point of conversation!

Great app for tightening up form...
Great for tightening your sword form up for combined Taijiquan, but without a Sifu/Shifu it is difficult to understand Taijiquan by watching a video. I learned the sequence b4 I knew anything about the Jian alone and the work it takes to become proficient, I am from the southern schools (wing Chun and Hung Kuen systems so staight sword is one of more advanced plus a Dao is use more in southern Gong Fu) so internal training (qigong) is highly used. It wasnt till I began Sun Family Taijiquan did the principles of yin and yang/ soft and hard and substantial and insubstantial make sense and only then could I understand the foot work of taijijian. These apps are great for reference and entertainment, but you cannot learn theory in subtitles and no teacher. Even distance coraspondsnce is hard, so w/o someone to make corrections you will have no continuity, softness, breath work, internal power, and a relaxed proper taiji posture... Learn a empty hand form from a instructor then attempt this. 1 yr and I still am correcting myself. Taijiquan is a journey that need patience and humility. Great form and exactions of postures though, but find a teacher.
Master Li: Tai chi sword
App finally loaded. Overall, pretty good, lot's of pointers. Only problem subtitles sometimes too fast. It's worth $2.99 considering the amount of information.
