Not what I expected
I like puzzle games. I like Steampunk. The game seemed to have good reviews, and so I decided to try it out. I have to say that it really didn't live up to my expectations.
The tutorials are good. They ease you into the game well, although the hints often don't pertain to the level you're playing, which can be confusing. The biggest problems I have are that the puzzles are time-based, the controls are finnicky and the changes in matter really aren't that interesting.
When I play puzzles, I like to take my time and think things over. You can do that in this game, but at significant score penalty. You always feel rushed, which is not what I would want from a puzzle game. This is compounded by the fact that you have to place apparatus very very precisely, not something that's easy to do on the iPhone. I also often find that I often do the wrong thing (like start rotating the apparatus instead of moving it) which under a time constraint can be frustrating.
I honestly didn't get too far into the game, but from what I could tell it seems like solids and liquids behave almost identically. Solids are just the sparkly version of liquids. It was kind of difficult to differentiate between the two, and I really expected solids to have their own unique quality.
It seems like there is a good game underneath some of the less favorable design decisions, and the art is really nice for an iPhone game. The gameplay just tended to be frustrating rather than exciting or relaxing, and that's not what I'm looking for in a puzzle game.
