Description

Mbira is an ancient musical instrument that has been played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Its most important function is as a tool to communicate with the ancestor spirits at religious ceremonies and social events.
MbiraSS recreates the original beautiful and clear sound by removing the bottle caps and shells that are often affixed to the soundboard to make a buzzing sound.

Needs work, not authentic, no features, over-priced

Mbiras have different tunings, and often have some bottle caps or other kinds of jangly, buzzy attachments. This software has neither. It has very clean sounding samples, which might as well have been sampled from some run-of-the-mill synth. The sound lacks the variety and personality of a real mbira. The notes have a long sustain which might not work for some songs. I wish the mbira interface was re-sizeable and re-positionable. It would be cool if more authentic samples were available, and I wish different tunings could be either selected or even programmed. Samples from an mbira with a pick up OR an mbira with a deze (resonator) would be nice.

Nice idea

All the notes are real, individual samples as far as I can tell; no transposition/cut/pasting happening. The mbira sounds like it could be made by Fradreck Mujuru.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend it unless perhaps you have an iPad. The iphone is simply too small to be accurate while playing with it. It responds quickly to your input, though.

Great App!

I'm not a musician, but I wanted to give the mbira a try. Could be more realistic if the app supported portrait orientation. I can't hold it right as a landscape layout.
