Ratings and Reviews
Great concept. Poor execution.
I will start by saying that this is a great idea. That is why there are 2 stars instead of 1. I just hope they make some very necessary improvements. For example, the tutorial shows that you can look up words with a tap. It has never worked like that for me. To look up a word I have to swipe or “highlight” the word back and forth, often times more than once. It’s to the point that googling it would be faster.
The other irritating issue is defining words which have punctuation directly behind it (periods, commas, parentheses, etc.). It often recognizes the word, but the punctuation is also recognized. Because of this a “no matches” message is displayed. Essentially the app cannot distinguish punctuation, which is surprising and disappointing.
Like I said - this is a great idea, but it just doesn’t perform anywhere near as advertised. Until improvements are made save your time and your dollar.
Smart, fast word lookup with a tap
Yesterday, while reading a paperback, I came upon an unfamiliar word. I pulled out my iPhone, launched a dictionary app, and started typing the word.
It struck me that it would be so handy if I could just tap on the word through my phone’s camera viewfinder and have the definition appear, rather than (1) put down my book, (2) open the dictionary app (3) type/speak the word.
With a little googling, I found meanings, which does exactly what I want, with aplomb. Tapping a word on the page brings up the built-in dictionary definition. Additionally, one can look up the word in Google and Wiktionary.
I sincerely hope the app can continue to be updated and maintained by its developer. It represents a simple yet intuitive way to look up words and there are no doubt other uses beyond definitions. This app deserves more attention that it has so far received. Highly recommended, even if you already have another dictionary app.
Hey don’t go!!
I have recently been getting a notification from iPhone saying that this app will no longer be compatible with iOS 11! I would hate that, I love this app. Please, don’t go! It seems a lot of people who try this app like it please adapt it to make sure that I can keep working!
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
