Amusing, but limited

I'm not much of a musician, but I'm enough of one to get tired of this app in a few minutes. I probably gave it an hour in total. At that point I felt like it didn't have much left to give. It's one bar, repeated over and over. Four instruments, four moods, a bit of messing with tempo. No, I'm not expecting a massive mixer and zillion instruments and so on. But I found it simplistic. I tired of my own compositions quickly. I sorta laughed at the idea that I'd want to save one, even the ones that I liked. Maybe I'm just rubbish at composing good stuff with it. Here's an idea: preload it with a few demo songs.

I will give it this: the sounds are beautiful and the whole concept of 'moods' is a good one. They've gone to a great deal of work to hide the complexity of constructing music and just let people fiddle with something that will always sound good. I am not surprised that lots of other folks like it. I found it was played out quickly, though.

I started this as a 2-star review, and then i picked up the app and messed with it a bit, to be sure I was remembering details correctly. The next thing I knew, I had made a song I liked. Still not good enough to save, but good enough to correct my rating from 2 to 3 stars. :)

Slick, simple step sequencer with loading

Melodica is a matrix step sequencer -- a grid of buttons that a wave sweeps across to synthesize music. This puts it in the same category as iPhone apps like Beatwave, Paklsound1, panome, and TonePad.

While not quite as fully-featured as Beatwave overall (e.g. no layer support, no tone set add-ons) Melodica has a quick configuration interface that is a pleasure to use -- the mood-based tone and scale sets are clever, and the saving, loading, and searching interface is quite clever (although the numerical search function could use some explanation). It is also quite stable compared to say Beatwave (which can sometime pause or lag on my iPhone 3GS) or panome, which can have display bugs on newer devices. If you want simple and polished fun, Melodica is the best choice. If you need more features, try Beatwave.

Fun little thing to mess around with.

I do like what is presented here, but I feel like it could be a little more. Mostly I want a feature to grab multiple melodies from diffrent instruments and layer them so you can make a song with base, chords, and lead and be able to set a universal tempo for all the tracks. Maybe to also string together multiple melodies and make entire songs out of them. I've tried to record the different melodies to make a simple rythm take a chord change, but without the reverb from the first melody the transition to the second one is clunky. It would take more effort then I'm willing to commit, making me feel as though this app falls short. I do see potential in this though. I would like to more come from this, if development is still possible.
