Ads in Paid Vetsion

VivDiva

I purchased this app a year or two ago (cost exceeded $15-20 but I don’t recall how much I paid) and for longest time there were just small ads on the bottom. Lately not only are there small ads but annoying pop-up ads! I looked online and in App Store to see why I was getting pop-ups only to discover that now I apparently have to pay an additional $1.99 a year to avoid ads. What a ripoff. I would never had paid for their app had I known they were going to dump ads on me later on. I think Apple should have rules against this. I already paid for an ad-free version.

Update: I researched my old Apple purchases and discovered that Apple charged my credit card for purchasing the paid version but it’s Buy link was for this “free” version. I’ve notified the developer twice through the app feedback function with details and request to get the paid version that Apple should have given me but the developer has never gotten back to me. I wish I had discovered that Apple had given me the free version but it wasn’t as obvious in 2016 that the free one had ads as they were small type links on bottom screen. Now the ads are annoying pop-ups without any close X boxes that can only b eliminated by closing the entire app and reopening it. I’m leery of buying any other paid apps from Apple after getting charged for them and getting free ones instead. With the developer not being responsive to my feedback contacts to them, I’m out of luck.

Developer Response

This version of the app has always been free and ad-supported. We did add subscriptions in the last year, but this version of the app has never been a paid download. If you purchased another version of the app, we're happy to help you get that one back on your device. Please send us feedback through your app so we can help you through our customer service channels.

Superb App, but Missing One Feature

Lady.CF

Love the new cleaner, clutter free interface and design. More importantly, they’ve thankfully made it easier and seamless to add the word of the day to the user’s favorites list. This is a welcome convenience that was long overdue.

Overall, the app works very well, and the yearly $1.99 fee to remove ads is definitely worth it. The one feature I’d like to see added is the ability for users to add notes to each of our favorite words on our customized list. I’d like to be able to notate how I heard a word for the first time and in what context I heard it. This would help users retain the definitions of unfamiliar words that they looked up on their own, since we’d be able to constantly see our own notes referencing the word in personalized context. Also, would love it if the app engineers could make the clock timer 15 seconds for all the weekly vocabulary challenges, instead of the current 10 seconds on some games.

Other than that, the app is wonderful and I access it every day via the app’s widget. Lastly, honorable mention must go to Merriam Webster’s account on Twitter. The daily dose of smart vocabulary insights presented with biting wit, harmless shade, and droll sarcasm is the best. Keep ‘em coming.

It can challenge me

Betsy from Salem

I have an excellent vocabulary proven by many tests and games of this type. In one hour (while paying attention to the news) I played all three games and reached the top competency of all three as well as trying to score no mistakes in the least amount of time. I have had smart phones since they have been available and have resisted until now playing any without someone (my sister, usually) trying to talk me into it.
The Mirriam Webster app games broke through my resistance. Even the “beyond difficulty” level is not impossibly difficult, but there are words and pictures (What is This?) and the True and False questions that I don’t know. That is where my fun comes from - learning something I hadn’t previously known. I also learned that some of the questions have rather nit-picky answers. Some of the questions require somewhat closer reading than I gave, sacrificing the closer reading for the sake of speedy answers.
But, it is only a game played for my own amusement. I am not going to get my knickers in a twist if I am not perfect. Didn’t Watson prove superior to any human competitors? Isn’t that the point of AI? Scary, but true!
