Instantly reach the people in your life—for free. Messenger is just like texting, but you don't have to pay for every message (it works with your data plan).

Not just for Facebook friends: Message people in your phone book and just enter a phone number to add a new contact.

Group chats: Create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place.

Photos and videos: Shoot videos and snap selfies or other photos right from the app and send them with one tap.

Free calls: Talk as long as you want, even with people in other countries. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply.)

Even more ways to message:
Bring your conversations to life with stickers.
Preview your camera roll photos and videos without leaving the conversation--then choose the perfect ones to send.
Record voice messages when you have more to say.

Extra features:
Know when people have seen your messages.
Forward messages or photos to people who weren't in the conversation.
Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them.
Turn on location to let people know when you're nearby.
See who's available on Messenger and who's active on Facebook.
Turn off notifications when you're working, sleeping or just need a break.
Stay logged in so you never miss a message.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Messenger uses location data to make features work, help people connect and more.

Still no Siri support?! Now becoming much too bloated!

With iOS 10 apps can now use Siri APIs to let users send messages in them with Siri. Facebook messenger is updated weekly, but never adds any meaningful features or even says what's new! (Just look at the version history on the AppStore) This is especially embarrassing for facebook as the main facebook app was one of the first things supporting Siri at all! The only reason for facebook to not add Siri support is so they can get us in the app to see their ads and try to push more unnecessary "features" to us! I will use messages rather than facebook whenever possible thanks to its Siri support, and actual useful updates! Also messages isn't selling my data, unlike Facebook, another bonus!

Other social networking apps like WhatsApp have Siri support, it's unbelievable that Facebook messenger still doesn't!

Also this app is becoming much too bloated losing most of its appeal as a simple universal messenger app without all the bloat of Facebook; now it's practically trying to replace the phone's OS with built in stupid games that nag you to play them every time a friend does, and pop ups nagging you to send photos and add them to your "day".

So annoying

This app is incredibly annoying. I have to download this app because Facebook requires it so I can see the once a month anyone actually messages me on Facebook. The other 99% of the time I open this app is to clear the completely useless notifications that I've become friends with someone on Facebook.... I know I became friends with them because I accepted their friend request 5 seconds ago. I thought well if I turn off notifications I won't be annoyed as much right? Wrong. Now that notifications are off on messenger I get a pop up every time I do open the app telling me my notifications are off and asking do I want to turn them back on? No. No I don't. I knowingly turned them off, you asking me to turn them back on constantly reminds me of how annoying your app is. You are the worst, go back to having one app (Facebook) and allow me to message people without toggling between apps.

Good app but needs help

I would give this a four star rating except for two things. First there is no deleting a message. I sent a message to the wrong person and I could only delete it from my side not his. The only way to avoid this is to just watch where you click. The second thing, which is only mildly irritating, is that it takes too long for it to send s message. I was messaging and it would take at least two minutes for it to get to him. But other than this the app is awesome and Im very glad I downloaded it. Its a great way to talk to people you dont wang knowing your phone number. However if youre friends it would be much easier to just text. Oh yeah and the group chat is great, very fun practical and efficient.
