A Program That Keeps Getting Worse
This program had two strikes against it in my book from the beginning. The first is that I do not like Microsoft’s attitude toward consumers. The second is that I do not like cloud-based programs. It is ridiculous to pay for a program year after year and end up owning NOTHING. The program earned its final strike as I used it. I have used the cloud-based Microsoft Word program for two years, and I HATE it. How the program functions changes with no notice at all, and Microsoft NEVER considers the needs of its customers in its changes. I am a college professor. My needs are not those of corporate executives. One of the recent changes that happened in the middle of the night is that top and bottom margins are not visible in PRINT LAYOUT view or any other view. I GRADE material in headers and footers, and I NEED TO SEE THAT INFORMATION. While that is the most important way “improvements” have hindered my work, there have been others that are annoying because they demonstrate either a lack of logical thinking or complete disinterest in being user-friendly. For example, it used to take one action to select a particular color I use when grading papers. Of course, Microsoft has never been particularly interested in making its programs user friendly. We know that. That’s why we use Macs, right? :-D
Improving All the Time
I am not sure why all the negative reviews for this. Yes, this is the same subscription model that has been around a few years. $70 for single license, $100 for family licenses. You won't get anything for free. Don't forget that you are also getting 1 TB of OneDrive Cloud space for each of the family members on the license. That is a great deal when you look at having to also purchase other cloud drive subscriptions.
Some reviewers stated that it "BROKE" their current installation of Office. Any program that updates from a prior version erases the old version. If you don't like the newer version, delete and reinstall from your prior version installation disks.
I have always found Microsoft Word to be stable, across all my devices, whether on the puny MacBook Air to my fully loaded iMac.
It's good but less risky
I've took a course early in college and learned quickly on how to use microsoft office about 5 years ago (it's worth it). It helped learn how to work microsoft to it's full potential.
Throughout the years I learned a few things about word... NEVER... EVER... trust microsoft to save your hardwork assigments. I did this twice on one of my Enlish 2010 assigments, then had my computer screen break. And always write on pages, then format on word.
HOWEVER, i'm all in for microsoft valuring the importance of college. I love the update, citation manager is a must. And my mac does my updates now! No more updates before me needing to write something important...
Those who still are reading -- take a course. If you hate it, then use one of the other bloatware apps that miss the 'academic' purpose of this app. Writing in the academic world might not be your gig.
