Midi Mock

By Victor Cerullo

Open the Mac App Store to buy and download apps.

Midi Mock is a virtual musical keyboard that generates Midi note events through your Mac keyboard or mouse. This app sends Midi note events to software synthesizers and hardware synthesizer modules connected to your Mac, providing visual feedback of the notes being pressed on the keyboard.

Midi Mock can be also used as a polyphonic synthesizer on its own, to play the built-in Mac DLS sounds either through the Mac keyboard or by connecting a USB Midi keyboard to it.

It has mouse-operated pitch-bend and modulation wheels, octave transpose buttons and a velocity slider.

The "Global Keys" switch activates a feature to capture keypresses also when Midi Mock is not the frontmost window, making it perfect for playing softsynths through your Mac keyboard (e.g. Logic software instruments like the EXS24).

On the US keyboard layout, the keys generating Midi note events are the ones corresponding to the following letters and symbols:

top rows: Q2W3E4RT6Y7UI9O0P-[
bottom rows: ZSXDCVGBHNJM,

The physical position of the keys will be the same on any keyboard layout, but they may correspond to different letters and symbols depending on the specific country layout.

The arrow keys are mapped to the functions of internal sound program increase and decrease (right, left) and octave transpose (up, down), with autorepeat.

What's New in Version 1.1

Added six keys to facilitate playing through the Mac keyboard; on the US keyboard layout the new keys correspond to the following letters and symbols: ] Backspace L . ; /

Doesn't play nice with Logic Pro

I got this App so that I could use my laptop keyboard to control midi signal to software synths in logic pro 9, unfortunatley it doesn't work so well for that purpose. While in the Logic Pro 9 window the keyboard will not control the midi mock app. Switching to the midi mock window allows you to contol the note with the keyboard, but then you can't do anything in the logic Pro 9 window. if you want to hash out ideas on the go, it works, but with no options to record or route the audio to a program that does record it renders this app useless for any productive purpose. Only works as standalone software.

Good but incomplete

This is a very nice piece of work for the price. It does very well for testing with other MIDI apps/devices. It's strangely missing some capabilities though, like sending program change events. I notice it hasn't been updated since 2011. Hopefully it can be soon. Thanks!

Works great with DJay

I have a USB turntable setup that I normally use but like to play around with just the laptop sometimes. Sadly DJay doesn’t allow you to use your keyboard but this app worked great with it. Thanks!
