Mindful Bite - The Mindful Eating Helper
This purpose of this application is to help eaters slow down between bites, and remind them to stop eating when they are no longer hungry, thereby reducing unwanted calories.
Mindful Bite has two functions that can help users become a mindful eater:
1 Take the Next Bite
Every thirty to sixty seconds, Mindful Bite flashes a signal to let you know to take your next bite. The signal can be a light, a tone, or a vibration. If you are still chewing when the signal flashes, wait until the next signal to take your next bite.
2 Evaluate Hunger and Satisfaction Level
Every five minutes, the signal flashes rapidly several times to prompt you to evaluate your hunger and satisfaction level.
Start by using the settings to select how the signal will alert you; a tone . Next set the desired times between bits.
Select Done to return to main page. When you're ready to start eating, press the triangle. The light will turn red, and in thirty to sixty seconds (depending on your setting), the light will turn green for about 3 seconds, acommpanied by the tone and vibration if you selected those.
If you are chewing when the alert signals, wait until the next signal to take your next bite. If this happens often, you may want to increase the time interval between bites in the settings menu.
While you're chewing, think about how the food tastes and feels. This makes you more aware of what you're eating and helps you recognize when you are satisfied.

Practical and simple
I love this app. It's a simple idea, easy to use, and practically applicable. I don't totally get why people are complaining about it working while the phone is on. Um, yeah, the phone will be on while you are using the app. And if you are listening to iTunes while you are eating, that's not mindful eating - you are missing the point entirely. Mindful eating should be focused on your experience of your food, your appetite, your hunger levels, and thats it. Anyway, I found it practical and useful, and the most immediately applicable to my life of all the mindful eating apps I previewed.
The app does not permit you to run it in the background with the vibrational setting, so that you can read or listen to a podcast etc., while using the bite timer. Are you really supposed to keep the app open, while awaiting the Pavlovian beep or flashing light to take the next bite? In addition to running in the background, the audio effect of the app should not mute when you open another audio app (like iPod), so you can hear the tone beneath music or voice. If you're going to charge a buck, learn how to program.
Focus on your food
This app does what it promises simply. It doesn't work in the background, but that is in keeping with the principles of mindful eating. You shouldn't be focusing on anything but eating when you are eating, so limiting distractions is key.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
