Great mindfulness workout
This app is a great introduction but is also valuable for serious students of mindfulness. Be sure you're getting the right app. This is NOT for relaxing to fall asleep or NOT some odd "binaural beats" mind trickery. Mindfulness is a way of observing your physical, emotional, and cognitive experiences. It grew out of westernized Buddhist ideas, but now is researched and studied (Google the MARC, "Mindfulness Awareness Research Center" at UCLA for example) . The benefits of good practice will reduce stress, reduce reaction to negative emotions, and a great sense of well-being. No shortcuts. Like long distance running or piano playing, it's all about practice, practice, practice---but that's why this app is so good. You can start with the five minute setting. As days and weeks go by, work up to the 40 minute sessions, though maybe for some 40 minutes are most convenient on weekends. I'd like to see a v.3 with hour long workouts, though you can work around that with judicious use of pauses on the 40 minute setting. This teacher on the app is excellent and he's been in the field a long time.
3 years and strong
This app has helped me through some hard times. I've owned it for ~3 years now, and it's been my go to mediation app. It has been with me through interviews and new jobs, internships, anxiety attacks, starting new colleges, tests and exams, presentations, moving, death in the family, abusive family...you name it, I've used this app to overcome it. It helps me sleep when I'm too tense and helps me "let go" when I need to relax. Meditation isn't miracle work, you need to allow yourself to give in, but I saw a huge improvement in my life. This is one of those "will never delete" apps.
Complete Mindfulness Instructions
This app is extraordinary. Short of finding your own personal meditation teacher, it's the best intro to mindfulness I've found. The guided meditations include complete instructions in this core practice, from following your breath to opening your awareness to the full range of experience. The glitches in the earlier version have been eliminated, and the narration is gentle, relaxing, and precise. With all the scientifically proven benefits of mindfulness, this app is worth 10 times the price. It has everything you need--the trick is to find the time and energy to practice!
