What's New in Version 1.0.2
Lack of a true joystick hurts this game
Miner 2049er was the second computer game I bought for my Apple 2e back in the 80s, so it's nice to have this again. I'm just interested in the original version and not the updated one.
What you quickly find is that an on-screen joystick can be a little touchy, especially around areas near the slides or the edges of a ramp. That can make the game a bit frustrating. Anyone who played the original knows that, at times, you have to make some almost micro-movements which is very difficult on an iPad.
What I wouldn't give for an old-fashioned one-button joystick (like the one for the Atari 2600) that you could connect to an iPad. The iCade is too expensive. (Plus, I don't know if it would work. The support page for this game doesn't appear to have any topics on this game.) And another company makes a little joystick that you can attach to the screen, but it doesn't always work as well as it should.
So kudos for bringing this game to the iPad. But until there's a better way to control things, this is only good for a quick burst of nostalgia now and then.
One of my favorite games for. The 80's. I've played the pc version which is a 100% true port.
Overall the game is good, but there are a few weeks that need to be made.
1) not all the sounds are there. Missing walking sound, end of level warp and death sounds.
2) the controls are off. I don't mean difficulty using the touch screen (which many games have), I mean that bobs speed is variable. In the original game he had one speed and he moved at that speed or he was stopped. This version his top speed is too fast and that makes for difficult controls.
3) the ladders aren't "locked". In the original while on a ladder you were only able to go up and down. On this version you can move left or right and essentially walk off the middle of a ladder.
Overall, this is a good initial step. With a few weeks the original look and feel could be there.
Great port of an old Atari game
This is a great port of this Atari 8-bit game. I think this was a good solution for the joystick- it can move around to stay out of the player's way, or tilt controls can be used, which are very effective.
Also, very important in a game of this age - classic mode, with the 8-bit graphics! It really brings me back.
This is a good example of the kind of effort and care that should go into bringing a classic game to iOS - respect for the look and feel of the original, but attention to gameplay on the new platform.
This port is five stars. The only reason I gave it 4 is the game itself - it's a good game, just not as great as some of the others of that time.
