Customer Reviews

Great app and customer support

I was both a quicken and quickbooks user and wanted to get serious about seeing if Mint could replace at least the quicken. After using it for six months I've found it's better at updating, categorizing and recording transactions.
I use the website occasionally, just to create a new category, but otherwise everything is done from the mobile app. I haven't opened quicken for over four months. Tax preparation on should be just as easy with Mint and the importing of data is great since I'm mostly cashless.
I had a problem about 30 days ago where my credit union accounts couldn't be updated. The support team at Mint responded quickly and stayed involved until the issue was resolved. This level of support was better than with quicken so Mint is my go to app for personal financial tracking and budgeting.
I'm still a quickbooks user for my business because it's more complex than what Mint or quicken could handle.

Free, accesses most external accounts, but many rough spots

I've used Intuit products for years. After they let Quicken deteriorate, I tried Mint, which they bought from the independent company that developed it. It does a big fraction of what Quicken did, including accessing external accounts and allowing you to categorize and notate expenses. It has a rudimentary budgeting tool, but has little ability to generate customized reports. In many areas, it uses font sizes and colors that are nearly invisible. When something is broken, they take email reports and often they address them in a reasonable amount of time (less than a month!).

I rate this 3 stars because it's better than any alternative and would not be worth $40 if you had to purchase it. I think they have a monopoly, which isn't going to motivate them to spend much to create a high quality product. I suspect their mantra is "get as many users as possible, with costs as low as possible, so we can monetize them through sales of third-party offerings.

I miss the days of software that was mostly about enabling users to do well and easily the things they most want done. Mint is mainly for people with little financial experience or savvy. It is however about the only reasonable way I've found to pull all your spending and income into one transaction monitoring system automatically.

Keep your expectations low, and Mint won't disappoint you.

Great App

I have been using this application both desktop (originally) and mobile. This is fantastic for having a view of all of your balances and loans in one place across financial institutions. I have not yet run across a FI that does not participate that I have had accounts with. I use the budgets and alerts, but mostly just to track transactions and balances. I also like how you can add assets, and tie loans to those assets.

The one constructive feedback I have is that the category and classifications of account types is a bit restrictive. For example, my home equity line and other lines of credit show up as credit cards, and you cannot change it. It is a small very minor inconvenience, so it really does not impact my 5-star rating.
