In 1936, the state of Montana began using the license plate prefix numbers still used today. Numbers were assigned to counties based on their population. If you know the code number, you can identify the county that issued most Montana plates.

Montana PlateFinder was created to help you learn about Montana by reading the codes at the beginning of license plates you encounter while traveling in Montana and elsewhere. The app shows where each county is located, with links links to additional information about each county and its county seat.

Paper Replacement

Jerry's I World

Like I told the developer, I have had a printed and faded copy of the Montana plate system for a very long time. This is a nice replacement to see where my home state people are from when I'm traveling about the country. Simple and very easy to use.

This I way cool!!!

I love this app! I'm a native Montanan and still am not familiar with all 56 counties and their county seats. My husband is not from here...so when he asks me where a vehicle is from, I can tell him that I can find out...using this app for the ones I don't know.

Fun Little App!

This is a fun little trivia app! I only hope that future versions will add even more trivia for each county. And how about commenting on the color of the plates over the years?
