Teaches addition and subtraction math facts in a visual form, leading to deeper understanding.
Receive the benefits of Montessori math materials on an iPad. Great for Montessori and more traditional classrooms -- extra practice at home and for homeschoolers.
Montessori Bead Facts +/- for the iPad is an innovative new incarnation of a classic "Montessori" math material. It uses the Montessori colored beads to show the relationship of numbers in the basic addition and subtraction math facts.
This app was created collaboratively by incorporating ideas from Montessori teachers, parents, IT professionals, and perhaps most importantly, Montessori and more traditionally schooled children themselves.
Children who already have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction can practice math facts by manipulating colorful number beads.
Children will be able to:
- Manipulate on-screen beads proportional to the numbers they represent
- Use a “show me” function to review facts they want to see presented
- Perform addition and subtraction math facts
- Practice and test their math fact skills
Through settings screens, teachers and students can set problems to work on a specific set of numbers, if wanted. With "Custom" feature, teachers and students can make their own problems within the typical math fact set of numbers.
Using the iPad, the beads are directly proportional (without the extra wire ends of some physical materials) and can duplicate number line activities to show the relationship between math fact families.

Ratings and Reviews
I'm pleased! The interaction is intuitive and doesn't compete with the concepts for your attention. There's some grace in the drag and drop so you don't have to place items perfectly. The "show me" feature is perfectly paced and helpful for the parent if you're not familiar with the hands-on Montessori analogue. The settings give good control over which facts appear.
Great but has a tragic flaw
This app would be great if it weren't for a tragic flaw which makes it nearly useless for unsupervised learning. The whole point of the app is to help kids think in terms of quantity to add and subtract. However there is no corrective feature which other Montessori learning apps use. When a child drags the wrong quantity of needs over it should reject the selection with an appropriate sound. Also I think it would be more helpful if the blank number of beads matched the number of the addend. The same should be true down below in the matching section. only the correct quantities should be allowed to stick. Without this there is no guidance to the child without adult guidance. The child can just randomly put any bead group and not know if they're on the right track. Fix this and it will work fine. Then add a free play section where the student can move any groups of beads and the count will adjust to the correct answer and it will be awesome. Otherwise app great with nice graphics.
The Best Yet!
We were all more than delighted to find Bead Facts as it is an application perfectly suited to teach addition and subtraction facts using quantities rather than just counting. Bead Facts is a bit more advanced than just a counting bead frame. Te app does an outstanding job of teaching quantity addition and subtraction after children know counting. It reinforces number combinations and is one children can use for quite a while.
This app has a full range of settings so that parents can select the numerals with which the child works or just let the game select them.
One of our favorite features is the "Show me" where the game demonstrates an ideal way to use all the great parts of the activity.
At our school, we are so glad we found this app and have now also bought the other apps from this group. Each costs just a few dollars and is more than worth the investment.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
