Description

Our apps are developed to enhance the learning and help create strong math foundations. Skip counting is adding the same number over and over and over again.

Montessori Bead Skip Counting is an innovative new incarnation of a classic "Montessori" math material, the “short chains” and “long chains”. It uses the Montessori colored bead chains to show the relationship of number multiples in a chain/number line format. Students can drag the tags or input the number.

This app teaches skip counting with Montessori beads as a precursor to multiplication tables/math facts in a visual form, leading to deeper understanding. Great for Montessori and more traditional classrooms -- extra practice at home and for homeschoolers.

Students who already have an understanding of addition can practice skip counting, as repeated addition, by building colorful number chains and labeling them with number tickets.

As students progress in their learning, they can enter numbers themselves for the multiples.

This app was created collaboratively by incorporating ideas from Montessori teachers, parents, IT professionals, and perhaps most importantly, Montessori and more traditionally schooled students themselves.

Students will be able to:
- Build on-screen bead chains for 1’s to 10’s
- Learn and practice skip counting for 1’s to 10’s
- Move labels for the skip counting beads to the correct place on the chain
- Type in the number themselves when they have learned the skip counting
- Use the “show me” function to see how the app works, or to review chains they want to see presented
- Practice and test their multiplication math fact skills
- Review factors

Using the iPad, the beads are directly proportional (without the extra wire ends of some physical materials) and can duplicate number line activities to show the relationship for multiplication tables.

Limited

I love the idea of having the beads, but child is limited to making chains of one set (all twos' for example). Would be more useful for learning if there was free play and ability to compare different sets (how many fours make 16; how many eights make 16). It becomes a repetitive app very quickly. Easy fix to add free play.

Great app for skip counting!

Skip counting is a great way to introduce and practice multiplication and this app allows the child to experience in a wonderful way. The child can create 'chains' as short or long as he wants. The numerals needed will continue to appear in the box.

Typical to the Montessori material, there is no control of error except for visual and the child's knowledge of 'number' and the simple check mark that appears when the work is completed correctly. If the child puts a number in the 'wrong' place, there is no horn honking or whatever kind of negative sound you can think of - only the check mark appears when it's correct.

As the App title suggests, this app is for skip counting. Perhaps a 'square chain' app is on Montessori Tech's list of coming apps! I hope so! I appreciate their attention to detail!

Great resource tool-possible update

I teach in a Montessori classroom and I find this app very helpful to reinforce what the child has completed with actual materials or at home with parents.

My only problem with the app is that it doesn't allow you to see the squares or make connections between two chains. With my older students I have them get two chains from the cabinet and show me all the numbers in common. Which ends up with 3x2 and 2x3. Perhaps in an updated form or another app.
