Morton Subotnick presents a new way for your kids to create music. Pitch Painter is a musical finger painting app that is simple yet surprisingly sophisticated. While engaged in creative musical play, the child will be introduced to a variety of musical instrumental sounds and authentic scale tunings from four regions of the world.
-designed specifically for ages 3-5.
-select 3 instrumental sounds from each of 4 different regions of the world.
-Hear what you are creating as you paint it using up to three fingers at one time.
-play the "canvas" in many different ways:
-hear exactly how you painted it.
-hear it as a normal piece of ‘written’ music played from left to right.
-hear how it sounds upside down, backwards
-scrub it like a DJ
-erase notes you don’t want.
-save and load your compositions.
-detailed instructions for parents and educators.
-iOS 11 support
-fix for iPad1 rotation issues

First impressions of Pitch Painter
I like the idea of the different colors for different instruments. As a teacher, I had a few doubts about the pedagogical value of the app. My first experience was that students want to fill in the whole square, mixing different colors. What they come up with is a cacophony that isn’t really teaching them composition. There should probably be an adjustment to the app that limits them to single or double lines for each instrument, so that they will be encouraged to write linear melodies. The price was also a bit high.
don’t even know when it became MY app until saw a charge of 3.99
Excellent way to allow children to explore music!
I am a long time fan of the work that Morton Subotnick has done not only as a cmompser and electronic music pioneer, but as a software developer. I used all of his titles when I was a music teacher, and I especially admired the interface that this app employs - allowing children to compose music by drawing it with their fingers. The iPad is the PERFECT device for this concept, and I am thrilled with the way that he has transported his concept to the iPad. The interface is beautiful and children as young as 2 or 3 can simply pick it up and start composing. No instructions required, really. My 7 year old daughter loved playing with it - and it held her rapt attention for 20 minutes. That's priceless in my opinion.
Well done to Mort and the developers for bringing this to the iPad! Teachers everywhere should use this with their younger students.
