Wow! Making Photo Books is Actually Fun Again!
This application did everything it said it would. In starting my book, Motif did a great job selecting my best images and weeding out duplicates (I was skeptical of this claim but it actually worked!). I chose to “Autoflow” my book and was really impressed with how good it looked right out of the gate. There were definitely some adjustments I wanted to make – some images bigger, some smaller, etc. – but making those changes was so easy! Being able to drag the space between images and have everything resize is just awesome (it was actually fun). Another great feature is being able to preview different layouts of a page using the actual images on the page (rather than gray boxes); this made it really easy to try out pretty much every option for how a page could look. In terms of performance, Motif was nice and speedy and felt like a real Mac application. Bottom line: great application and can’t wait for my book to arrive! Also, given that Apple is going to stop their service in September, I’m really happy that there’s now a truly quality option to replace them.
Easy As Can Be!
As soon as I learned about this app I couldn’t wait to create an album. I am a photographer who has authored a number of iBooks using iBooks Author, and am a great fan of this approach to life. I chose “Our Honeymoon” as a subject, which honeymoon took place in the Wind River range in Wyoming, in 1977. The photos I chose were, therefore, from fairly ancient Kodachrome transparencies, which I scanned myself and optimized with the usual tools - challenging images to reproduce! I did not use the “autoflow" tool, but did the layout myself, which was ridicuously easy - dropping the images from Photos into the template. The resulting album is fabulous - a soft cover book containing 53 images of all sizes, for $35. You simply cannot beat that! Additionally, it was shipped in a very sturdy box and arrived in perfect condition. Such affordable albums will make it very easy for me to supply family and friends with a record of memorable events.
I am seriously mad at Apple...
... for removing the option to create photo books. The build-in option in the Photos app was signigificantly easier to use than this app. For example, I like to add texts to the photos that I put into the book. Trying to do so with this app is an utter nightmare aside from the fact that none of the layouts provide options with existing texts (e.g. beginning of a new chapter) like Apple did. In addition, you can only remove two pages at a time instead of a single page and you can't move pictures from one frame to the next. When I finally completed the book, I was asked to register an account. I entered all my information and kept getting an error message that I am choosing an invalid email address or password. Interestingly enough, I simultaenously received an email on that email address that thanked me for opening an account. I ended up having to use a different email address for it to work. As I am now typing this, I am stuck in the status "Uploading project files" with 0 seconds left to go... for the last five minutes. This app is ridiculous.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
