What's New in Version 24.1
Function over Form
The UI is a bit clunky (and dare I say "ugly") by iOS design standards but despite its aesthetic shortcomings, this remains my go-to offline GPS navigation app for all outdoor adventures--specifically cross-country wilderness hiking. While users may need to familiarize themselves with the app's features and functions beforehand, it has now become an integral part of my trip-planning ritual. I never leave home without first downloading an area map of the hike, which has saved me in more than a few instances from wandering off-trail (I also like to obsessively check my progress). Not all trails are marked, however, and the ability to upload and store custom gpx tracks and waypoints has allowed me to explore a greater range of rugged terrain without fear of disorientation. The app's built-in track recorder tends to drain battery on my iPhone 6 so I typically use it in conjunction with another app (MapMyHike) for tracking fitness data. If you love exploring the outdoors, then you need this app to be safe!
Great bones, terrible UI
Bug: Stated waypoint elevation is actually your current elevation.
This app has allowed me to hike Volcán Corazón in Ecuador and Volcán Maderas in Nicaragua without guides (the trails are on the map). It's also great for dropping Points Of Interest in other countries when traveling without cell service. The maps in this app are awesome, it has Google, Apple, and Microsoft, but the MotionX maps are what I use for hiking. They have all the trails I've ever needed in the US as well, which is amazing. I'm going to Nairobi and Tanzania soon and will be using it there as well.
Unfortunately the UI is a massive mess. Confusing menus, some very odd methods to get to certain information, for example waypoints can have photos and descriptions attached, but you can't get to that area of editing from clicking on a waypoint on a map, you must go through a different set of Waypoint Menus. There are also buttons in odd places, like when you go to download the offline maps, the download button is hidden at the top, while there is text at the bottom of the page, where you'd expect the download button to be, telling you to click the word download at the top of the screen. Crazy. Probably the most capable app I've ever used with the least usable interface. Thus it's a must have, but could be waaay better with a redesigned UI.
Love/hate this app. But mostly love (thrilled it exists at all). Just has so much unrealized potential!
Motion-X GPS Drive Voice Subscription
I loved this program and used it as my preferred choice for street navigation. Unfortunately, as of the November 24th update, a message appears explaining that the voice subscription for which I had paid will no longer be honored due to offerings by other services by such companies as Apple and Google.
No offer of a refund was mentioned for the paid subscription nor is apparently available. This is essentially stealing from paid subscribers by a company I previously respected.
The app is still on my phone and continues to function without the voice guidance feature. However, the app appears to have been removed from the Apple App Store and it is my impression that no further updates will be forthcoming for what had been, up to November 2015, an excellent program.
The current GPS program offered by Motion-X is not suitable for street navigation.
I would suggest purchasing another, better-supported app for street navigation offering a voice guidance feature. Due to the blatant taking if subscription fees for a service that was subsequently discontinued without prior notice or offer of a refund of the unused portion of the subscription I have lost trust in the integrity of this company.
