Ratings and Reviews
A couple of recommendations for the dev team.
Just got the ring yesterday and am very impressed with the hardware. It’s the same size but lighter and more comfortable then my tungsten ring I wear on my middle finger. I do recommend wearing workout gloves when lifting which I do to avoid heavy scratching. 3 day battery life is not bad given the size. I prefer wearing a nice mechanical over the Apple Watch so that’s out. I can’t sleep with any watches or brackets so the ring is a great help for monitoring sleep. Also I don’t like notifications coming from any place but my phone.
As for software there are 2 things that I and many others from what I’m reading would like to see. First of all the distance when on a treadmill or indoor is about 30% lower then reality. I ran 1 mile on the treadmill and it said .7. Outdoors is fine because it used the gps in the phone. This is an easy fix that can be accomplished in 2 ways. 1. Auto-calibration like the Apple Watch where it learns you stride both walking and running using the gps of the phone and gets better over time. 2. A manual calibration where you say set the treadmill for 1 mile and do a walk and run and at the end of each tell the app you either walked or ran a mile. It will then be able to calibrate your strides.
The other thing I would like to see is more sleep data such as deep etc like the fitbit and AW. If they can improve these 2 items I’d give it 5 stars vs 4. Thanks.
Developer Response ,
Thank you, your feedback and feature requests are very helpful for us to improve and I'll be sure the team gets your feedback. We are planning to add more detailed sleep data in the future, to make your Motiv Ring experience even better.
Motiv tests accuracy against foot pods which are the best source of “truth” for steps and compares performance to popular wrist-based trackers. Additionally, Motiv counts fairly sustained steps and not every random step — that’s our intention in depending on the Active Minutes metric as opposed to a 10k benchmark. Making sure you’re being properly “rewarded” for sustained physical activity rather than a blanket number of steps taken. Many trackers (and wrist-based devices) are reported to overestimate steps - which is why we aim to meet the accuracy of foot pods. For certain exercises, such as weightlifting, it may be difficult to auto-detect Active Minutes. This is because when you’re lifting heavy weights for an extended period of time or gripping something tightly, it’s more difficult for the heart rate sensor to get a clear reading. This is consistent with all optical sensors, which is why wrist-based devices have the same problem.
The sensor can accommodate for movement related to locomotion, like arms pumping while running, but cannot adjust for movement of the tissue under the sensor, like flexing or moving the muscles of the fingers. This means that disturbances and pressure changes, such as dribbling a basketball, punching, or tightly gripping handlebars, could impact signal possibly beyond our ability to correct. Please feel free to send us a bug report or email email@example.com, we'd be very happy to look into your walking distance issue.
Best Product and Support
I am one of the first group of users of this exotic ring. I want to give my honest review. The original ring came with short battery life, and the Motiv people acknowledged it. But they replaced the ring with short time lapse. I had been wearing the new ring for less than a year. However, it stopped functioning abruptly a week ago. I emailed Motiv, and they would send me a replacement; their engineering team will figure out what was the cause. The ring had been tracking my activities with accuracy.
I played tennis (three to four days, each time two to three hours) and the ring recorded every my bodily pulses, including active minutes, steps, miles, calories, and heart beating. I connected with my iPhone’s Application, and it gave my heart beat with original graphic renderings. Also, it showed my sleeping pattern: it told me my restless minutes.
I strongly recommend the Motiv Ring: it works for tracking all activities. You do not have to remind yourself how to record your pulses. It does for you.
And importantly, the Motiv has the ”Best Customer Service.” They are there to support you. You can trust them.
Waterproof and Unobtrusive
I’ve tried three other trackers, and now the Motiv. The biggest plus: it’s waterproof! I don’t have to remember to take it off to do dishes, swim, or shower. As a ring, I find it easier to wear all the time. It is subtle in appearance and goes with any outfit without looking like a fitness tracker. It might be a bit clunky for some people as the ring is a thick band, but I find it comfortable and totally forget I’m wearing it. It charges via USB which I like better than having to change & dispose of batteries. By monitoring heart rate as well as steps, Motiv has helped me improve my workouts, and changing the target heart rate over time as my fitness level improved kept me on track. I also like that it will ask “Were you active?” for any times of extended increased heart rate: apparently rush hour traffic and dental visits are particularly stressful for me, lol. Sleep tracking and resting heart rate is an added bonus, and I find that data interesting even though it was not what I bought this tracker for. This ring has really worked well for me, a valuable tool in my overall health & fitness program.
