MTA Subway Time gives you real-time train arrival information for selected routes of the New York City subway system. Knowing exactly when your train will arrive will reduce the time you spend waiting on the subway platform, and let you know of any service delays or reroutes before you pay your fare.

Very handy

Unlike New York Subway MTA, which only shows scheduled train times, MTA Subway Time shows the same information seen in the subway system itself; that is, the actual, expected arrival times, based on current conditions.

The interface is also very easy to use. I’d like to see one enhancement though. Once you select a train and a station, it would be nice to be able to quickly compare any other trains that arrive at the same station, so a commuter can more easily decide in a route change, if possible.

Still, it isn’t that hard to look up alternative routes quickly, but not if you’re unfamiliar with where you are, e.g. tourists, when you might not know what other trains are available. Nevertheless, it’s a very nice app.

Not slick, but works

Reliably pulls the info from MTA’s real-time tracking data, which I find accurate 90-95% of the time when things are running smoothly. There are glitches sometimes, but not the fault of the app. It really helps me make decisions about if and where to make a connection to another train.

An obvious improvement would be for the app to detect its location so you don’t have to manually choose it. Also a favorite station section would be handy for commuters. I also think the app could be more robust recovering from the frequent loss of connection you get in the tunnels. I find I sometimes have to quit and relaunch the app to get it to refresh.

Close, crash.

Simple design, Accurate time

As a daily commuter of the NYC Subway, I always use this app daily to find out when my next train is coming and what train I should take. I’ve even seen it adjust to service changes. The times are EXACT, down to the minute. Awesome app, I’d highly recommend it to anyone commuting in NYC.

Just a couple of things that could make this app even better:

1) The ability to add a favorite or frequently used station. Many people have already said that they wanted this, as it would make looking for the times at my home and work stops that bit faster to see.

2) Watch our for certain bugs, e.g. the (Q) and 42nd Street. For some odd reason, it displays 49th Street times when you tap it, instead of Times Square. For anyone else with this issue, you can easily just tap the (N) (R) or (W) lines and click 42nd Street there.

Overall, the app functions near-perfectly, and is very simple to use.
