The Digital Problem Solver (DPS) originally appeared in The Social Express™ as a tool for the characters to use to identify emotions and coping strategies. Users quickly requested a real DPS to use outside of the software.
My DPS is a customizable application that enables children to select a feeling and a coping strategy to calm themselves. My DPS features eight feelings including:
There are four coping strategies which include:
•Use Positive Self-Talk
•Take Five Deep Breaths
•Take a Break to Calm Down
•Remind Myself to Keep Negative Thoughts In My Head
When a child selects a coping strategy, he/she will then see a Hollywood quality animated video which models how to do the strategy.
Customize your DPS by adding your own feelings and coping strategies. This can be done by taking a picture or by importing from the camera roll. The pictures can be personalized by adding text to label the feeling or the strategy. Pictures can be deleted easily.
What's New in Version 1.1
Improved UI after taking pictures
Fixed minor issues if the App is closed while the Camera is active.
I assumed that this would be great because everyone is so fond of the social express(which we do not have). It feels like the coping videos are missing a full explanation. For example, in the picture for remind myself to keep negative thoughts in my head, there is a thought cloud with nothing, when you press the pic the girl gets a weird look on her face and that's it. Seems like the whole strategy isn't really there. The BEST thing about this app is the ability to add your own photos. We took various feelings and coping pics to use. Great practice for real life. Hoping future updates have more extensive videos. The music is wonderful!! My son will turn it on just to hear the feelings song.
Great tool for teaching social skills
I have been using the social express for several years. This app is more like a small sample of what their full program offers. Go to their website and pay for the subscription. I use it with the students I work with. You'll need to improvise and get creative with the webisodes; we do a lot of role modeling and doing the skill after (or during) the webisode. I recommend this to parents who have a child with Autism.
I downloaded this app out of pure curiosity. It seems like such a cool way to teach children about their emotions. Unfortunately, the options for emotions and, especially coping strategies, we're extremely limited. Didn't provide much help for blind children. Actually, none.
