Gets too hard, too fast
I really loved this game at first. My 5 year old loves playing it and solving the puzzles. It's very cute and slickly implemented. However, the learning curve goes from a gentle slope to a steep mountain in world two. It goes from requiring kindergartner math, straight into lateral thinking. A wait function is introduced and not really explained. The puzzles became a fun challenge for me, but too much for my son. We can play together, but I'm sad he can't play through by himself and have the satisfaction of solving it by himself. This was so close to being an fantastic app, let down by poor difficulty balancing.
One other gripe is that the girl costumes are unlocked after boy costumes. If you're going to have gendered costumes, shouldn't they both become available very quickly?
Awesome learning app
This app is one of the best I've come across for logic and reasoning learning as well as beginning math. We have had it about a year and my now 5 year old still plays it. It has helped him grasp the concept of simple addition as well as logic/planning. I am am a big fan of learning apps and am so happy when I see that he has selected this app to play over others as I think he is actually getting something valuable out of it. Highly recommend and I wish I could find more like it.
Fun with pre-programming fundamentals
A very well produced, entertaining game that teaches logical task breakdown.
My 8 and 9 year-old children have a lot of fun with this game. It's entertaining just as a game. It also teaches them to solve complex tasks using a set of simple commands for the robot. That's exactly how to get started with programming. And they can play it by themselves.
I am now helping my 8/9 yr-olds get started with MIT's Scratch programming language for kids. My Robot Friend is an excellent primer for moving on to Scratch. Sad to say, there is no iPad version of Scratch--you need a computer.
The children are enjoying Scratch and yet keep returning to My Robot Friend--the production quality is excellent and keeps them laughing.
A suggestion to the developer...we would love to see a "quick-play" mode (or an "older-kids" mode) that moves through the concepts more quickly.
