What's New in Version 4.0
National Geographic’s World Atlas has been completely rebuilt and redesigned. We've given the app a new look, a sleek new interface, and a host of new features—including daily trivia, an innovative statistics visualizer, and a much improved measuring tool.
You still have all the same functionality and features you’ve come to expect from the Atlas, but we’ve listened to your comments and suggestions and made it easier to use, more stable, and more elegant.
- All maps and location information have been updated
- Bing maps have been removed, which means no more jarring style change when zooming beyond Nat Geo cartography
- The distance measuring tool is now much more functional
- Offline map downloads have been decreased from ~500MB in size to 125MB in size, meaning they download fast and don’t take up as much space on your device
- You now have the ability to sync your saved pins across your devices
The honest truth
Absolutely shocked and appalled. It was almost worse than losing my library of music. My girlfriend and I took many trips throughout the world and saved notes within each pin drop reminding us of dates/ things that happened and people We met in each place...ALL GONE. The new design and features included in the "upgrade" have ruined everything I used to love about this app and rendered it completely useless. The people who did this and made the final decision on this should be fired and a huge apology should be issued for ruining one of the best apps I had on my phone. This new thing is 100% utter trash. I would much rather be able to zoom in and do research using a real atlas (like the app it used to be) than learn random facts about Tunisia being the northernmost country in Africa from a intrusive and less-useful app. It's a shame that Nat Geo would stoop so low by removing the heart of something so many people used daily while introducing worthlessness and uselessness into this poor excuse for an upgrade. What a huge failure. Looks like it's back to Google from now on...Delete.
Beautiful, Innovative Redesigning
Redesigning the app ensures stability and ease-of-use for first-time and repeat users. The app's resign is the next generation for maps and mapping. The app's characteristics are meaningful with excellent usability, especially in location positioning, distance measurement, and while easy to save and display information. The sync feature is awesome. The syncing of my pins saved in the previous version of the app was amazingly easy to perform. The graphics and colors are unique and pleasing. This is the most attractive redesign highlighting vibrant colors of pins with a well-balance of important map and mapping information. The overall app is very attractive with helpful and useful features and functionality. I would highly recommend this app to a friend or colleague. Thank you for an impressive and innovative atlas update.
Nice Design, No Content
While the design and animations are real slick, there is very little content that I can atlas access. Personally I wish the Earth was large and cropped off the screen so it was easier to navigate. Also the distance meter is very handy, but feel like it should be smack in the middle of the screen so it’s obvious that you need to move the map over the are that you want to start measuring from. ( just looks like a key at the bottom of the page now). I don’t want to bash on this app because it was clearly thought out and is wonderfully designed but it lacks some crucial aspects : Content, Easier Access to Locations, and is a bit sluggish on my iPhone 6. I’m hoping they will be quickly updating the app with more content (i’m sure they will) Seems like it just got pushed a bit early.
Things I like: Weather - Works well, it’s a global feature - Handy. // Save Pin. - Works well, also global. /// Trivia feature is cool, feel like it could be blown out a bit more with photos and such.
