So much value packed in one subscription!

Absolutely love this app! Please don't give Nat Geo low ratings if your network can't handle a download of a single issue - seriously people! This app works exactly as promised, with the unbelievable value - $20/year you get print edition in the mail, access to full archive online and on the iPad, PLUS this awesome app with electronic editions, which are just like the print editions, but interactive and remember where you're currently reading. In the last 6 months this has become a routine for my lunch break - read my Nat Geo in full. The latest retina display update is brilliant! The photos are gorgeous, as you would expect from Nat Geo! The news section updates constantly. The Everest blog and news! I swear, if you find a better value for $20 it must be something illegal!
I have a few wishes, but they are by no means reduce the value of this subscription! I'd like to be able copy/define text via the iPad built in dictionary. Also, email links to the articles online, if they are also available as regular NG website for the rest of the world.
Thank you Nat Geo team for the huge amount of work you put into each amazing and breathtaking issue! This is the first app I show to all my friends when they wonder if they should buy an iPad!

Nice pictures, awkward and confusing UI

I love National Geographic. I grew up reading great articles like the inspiring feature on the possibility of space stations parked at the Lagrange points in Earth's orbit (July 1976, still my favorite issue.) So I really looked forward to reading the articles and feasting my eyes on the deservedly famous photographs, on my iPad.

The articles are still fascinating (though in my opinion somewhat lightweight compared to the past,) and the photography is superb as always. My beef is with the way the content is presented and navigated. It seems the print designers haven't yet learned to take proper advantage of a non-physical medium. They don't follow the iPad user interface conventions and inexplicably require the user to scroll around a confusing multi-axis grid of pages that frequently doesn't respond well to attempted swipes. (Hello, there's this nice built-in class called UIGestureRecognizer. It works the way people expect it to. Use it.) There also is no way I could find to adjust the text size, which could be a big issue for some people--and again illustrates the designers' desire to retain iron-fisted control over how every pixel gets laid out. This is a flexible medium, people! Learn to use it to advantage, without staying stuck on retaining the look of your old print layout. Make it easy to navigate without having to stop and figure it out.
