The National Mall by Bluebrain
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
(Note: This app is intended to be used within the boundaries of the National Mall park in Washington DC.)
Bluebrain's The National Mall is the first in a series of “location-aware” musical compositions designed to be heard at specific sights around the world. The National Mall discards the passive listening experience and instead invites listeners to engage with their environment. The music changes and evolves based on the user’s location within the National Mall in Washington, DC.
To create the app, Bluebrain and contributing musicians composed a multitude of distinct musical segments, each of which corresponds with a designated geographic zone on the Mall. As the user traverses these zones, The National Mall tracks their location via the iPhone’s built-in GPS capabilities; the melody and rhythm of the music varies in accordance with the user’s path.
Though the sequencing of The National Mall changes depending on the user’s route and pace, the individual compositions remain as permanent as tracks on an LP: a user standing twenty feet south of the Sculpture Garden can return to the same spot a week, month or year later to hear the same music.
Bluebrain is the Washington DC-based music duo of brothers Ryan and Hays Holladay. For more information, visit www.bluebra.in
1. Open the app while in the boundaries of the National Mall in Washington DC.
2. Begin walking. The app may take some time to determine your location.
Additionally, we suggest the following to make the experience the best possible:
-Turn ON WiFi. You don't need to connect to a network. Simply having WiFi enabled helps the phone better determine your location.
-Quit all other applications, if possible

**Please note -- While this app is technically compatible with earlier versions of the iPhone, it is optimized for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. We apologize to those who experience problems with iPhone 3G **
**Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life**

What's New in Version 1.01
Improved startup location detection algorithm.
Doesn't Work Anymore
I'm a composer visiting DC and I really wanted to check this out. It doesn't work with iOS 9 or later.
Amazing concept, wonderful music, some technical issues
The creativity behind this "product"? "composition"? "environment"? Is terrific. GREAT idea. Very nice music / sound scape. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5-star app (or, for that matter, a 10-star app) is some technical glitches getting the music to actually start playing and not stop playing as I walked the mall listening on a 4S running ios 5.
Just a great idea. If you're in or coming to Washington, DC and you're going to be near the mall - get it!
This is going to get me to go back to the mall and walk around some more.
Thanks, guys and/or gals!
This is such a cool idea and well executed. I'm excited to try it in other cities.
