Nearby - Text Your Location (iAd Supported)
By Scott Marnik
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
Text your location to ANYONE, even if they don't have smartphones!
**WHAT IS NEARBY?**
Nearby is a super-simple app that will grab your current location using the iPhone's GPS, turn it into a Google Maps URL, and let you text it to anyone. Instantly share where you are with anyone in the world who knows how to use an Internet browser!
**WHY NOT OTHER LOCATION APPS?**
There are a lot of ways to share your location, but many are flawed. For example, Google Latitude is a great service; however, only a very limited number of cell phones can make use of it. Networks like Loopt are only useful if everyone signs up for it and keeps updating their location. Twitter geotagging is a nice option, too, but it won't help out if your friends aren't on Twitter.
Nearby takes out this "networking" middleman. It is NOT a network, and it is NOT a service. It is a tool to text and share your current location as a Google Maps link that literally anyone can open. These links will automatically open in the Maps app on any iPhone, and work on many other smartphones, too, so you don't have to worry about compatibility. Even if the recipient does not have a smartphone, he or she can enter the link into any Internet browser to see where you are! Nearby is also incredibly easy to use: open it up and allow the map to locate you, and once the blip is accurate enough, tap either Text Message or Copy to share your location!
**WHO IS NEARBY FOR?**
Anyone who has ever been texted "Where are you?"
**WHAT IF I HAVE AN IPOD TOUCH?**
Although the iPod touch does not have GPS, it does have wifi-based locating technology, which Nearby can make use of as well. If you install Nearby on an iPod touch, the text messaging feature will be disabled and you will instead be able to copy the link to the iPod's virtual clipboard and paste it anywhere--in an instant message, email, Facebook, or anywhere else! (The iPhone can copy links, too!)
Nearby is completely free and supported with iAds. Innovative updates, including retina display support, are already underway, so please support the advertisers!
If you find a bug, please don't one-star the app; tech support and bug reports are always available on Twitter @NearbyApp. I will do my best to fix them as fast as possible!
What's New in Version 2.0
• Can now tweet directly through the Official Twitter app if you have it installed! Just tap Share and Post with Twitter App!
• Beautiful new UI, along with 100% retina display support
• Text your location even if you don't have Internet! As long as you have cellular service, can get "locked-on" and URL shortening is Off, you can still share your location by text message. (Great for when roaming!)
• If no ads are available, map region expands to show more of the map--no more wasted screen real estate!
• Bug fixes
This app is one of those things where you go "why didn't somewhere think of this earlier?" I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to send someone my exact location and didn't have an easy way to do it. This does it and does it quick and perfectly. Great app.
Edit: I'm not sure why anyone would give this anything but a 5 star rating. Yes, it has adds. On the main download page it tells you "iAdz supported." it's not like you weren't expecting it. The developer has to make some money off his sweat and blood. Thankfully though, this developer did it tastefully. The add is small, at the bottom, and doesn't hinder the app at all.
If the app can't locate you, something is wrong with your GPS in your phone. All it does is pull your GPS from google maps. Don't blame this app.
This is one of those apps that is great to have at all times. This app is perfect for when someone asks where you are and just don't feel like describing where you are. It's great when you're traveling and don't know the streets well too. Works great, does what it's meant to do and does it well.
Exactly what I needed!
Simple and works like a charm. No fluff or clutter. It quickly sends a shortened URL of your location in a text message without any annoyances. I appreciate developers that fill the need for small, simple apps that work great (and free!)
