At Nest, we make products that are beautiful, thoughtful and easy to use. The Nest app is no exception.

Control your Nest Learning Thermostat, arm and disarm your Nest Secure alarm system, see your home with Nest Cam, and know if Nest Protect goes off – all in one place. And get notifications on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Nest uses sensors, algorithms and the location of your phone to do the right thing automatically, turning off the heat and turning on the camera when you leave. Forgot to set the alarm? Nest notices and will send you a Remind Me alert. And everyone at home can get notifications and control the Nest products they need with their own Nest Account – no more sharing passwords.

Terrible app

I spent almost $400 for two outdoor cameras and can't even use them when the app is not working which is most of the time. I set the zones and still get notifications for movement outside the zones. I turn the camera off and it still shows as being on on one screen and off on the another. I also have the nest thermostat which if I try to set a schedule using my iPhone it takes two days for The changes to reflect on the thermostat.

Update-The app is still not very good. There have been some changes which are for the better for example the zones work better and changes to my thermostat are quicker. Biggest issue now is the app takes forever to load a clip or picture. I recently had a prowler come check out my front door when we were not at home. I got the notification that motion was detected and attempted to talk to them. By the time the App finished loading the person was gone. Granted, I have a picture but it would have been more effective had I been able to let the person know they were being watched. All this does is lessen the viability of the camera. Also I have to delete and reinstall the app at least once a month because I will suddenly get notifications with no clip to view. Once I reinstall, that seems to take care of the problem for about a month.

Works very well, better than Ring

We had Ring Doorbell and Sticky Cams at our old house along with a security company startup Scout, and Ecobee thermostats. Decided to just switch over to Nest in our new home and am beyond happy with the performance. We have outdoor cameras, the security system and two nest thermostats— will order the nest doorbell once it’s available (March supposedly). Aside from having one app to show and control everything, I honestly think Nest is just much better quality and reliability than the previous stuff we had.
The only downsides so far:
• It’s quite expensive once you add it up. Probably spent $1500 on the system and install. I think it’s worth it but it isn’t cheap
• The Nest Guard (hub for security) isn’t too loud. Wish it had volume control or just a much louder speaker as it’s hard to hear the voice unless you are in the same room as it
• Subscription Services for security and cameras can add up. Not any different than all other vendors so I guess this isn’t a downside.. but still wish subscriptions were cheaper

Unbelievably poor performance

Mr Grumbles

It’s incredible that this product can be this expensive and have been on the market this long and still have such basic flaws. The idea of continuous video recording (CVR) is great, but when it takes 20 minutes of buffering and stuttering and suddenly skipping back to live view and buffering again, just to find a 20 sec clip of activity that just happened, you’re doing something very wrong. Want to see who stole your package? I hope you have an hour to screw around with the app! Want to shoo away that guy prowling around your porch? Better hope he’s part sloth, because it’ll take at least 45 sec to get the video going, never mind the two way audio. As an added bonus, the above exercises will massively drain your phone battery.

On the positive side, the nest cam and cloud service is still the best of the available CVR cloud services. Compare to Arlo, for example, which has the same poor playback and navigation performance, but with the added infuriation of incorrect timestamps (15-45 min off) and no good way to export clips (they actually suggest using another app or device to record your screen). So congratulations, Nest! You are the best! And still deserve only 2 stars.
