iOS version supported: iOS 7, iOS8, iOS9
General Information: List of WiFi Routers that support genie:
» Centria (WNDR4700, WND4720)
DSL Modem Gateway:
My Media uses the default media player on an iOS device to play media files if the iOS device is being used as a player. Supported media formats are:
• Supported audio formats: AAC, HE-AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV.
• Supported video formats: H.264, MPEG-4, and M-JPEG.
• Supported photo formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, and BMP.
Notes for My Media:
1) Each supported media format has limitations in media encoding parameters, such as bitrate, frame rate, and resolution. When My Media is unable to play media files with the supported formats, it may be because the files have higher bitrates or frame rates that exceed the rate it can support.
2) The devices listed in Player view will be Genie device and other devices available in the network. If you select another device to play media files, you may encounter some of the following behaviors, which are not the bugs:
• NETGEAR Genie needs to be running in the My Media function to show up as a player or source.
• Some media files can be played in some players, but can’t be played in other players. Different players support different kinds of media file formats.
• Genie can show photos and videos in Source view if you grant Genie permission to access the location service. Genie can’t play music from the iOS device due to copyright restriction.
• Use the File Sharing feature to transfer media files from your computer to Genie. After Genie is installed and the iOS device is connected to iTunes, go to the Apps tab. The File Sharing section is at the bottom of the page. Select Genie in Apps, then drag and drop the media files to the Genie Document list box.
• If My Media can’t find any source or any player, it may be because your device is disconnected from the NETGEAR router. • After any change in the network, including Wi-Fi setting, source folder change, and list of player change, you will need to restart the media service and refresh the source folder in the Option view.
• It sometimes takes a long time to access and play a media file. This may be caused by a slow network, large file size, or heavy load in the player or source device.

Work in progress
This app is pretty cool interface for a great router. The network map is cool but I'd rather have the option of a spreadsheet type list of devices I could sort by IP, device name or device type. I frequently want to shut off internet at night for the kids and I'd have 8 devices I need to shut off & back on every morning. It is painful to find these on the network map. The map is a cool representation but truthfully more an "oh cool" graphic feature than a genuinely functional one. If I could group devices by name and shut off a whole groups that would be awesome. Even more awesome would be a schedule for groups (kids off at night and back on in am).
Another cool feature is traffic meter although I'm not sure how accurate that is. Finally, I'd love the ability to see bandwidth use by device for the day/week/month!
Still the app is cool and I'm sure it will get updates. Many cool features such as remote access.
WAY better than I expected!
I honestly had my doubts about this app, especially when I initially tried to manage the genie feature using my MacBook with zero success. Gave it a shot on my iPhone during my 12-year old's birthday slumber party when I was horrified by the content the boys were streaming (one of them in particular) and the hour it was inevitably going to continue into the morning and to my delight I was suddenly in charge without them having even a single clue! It was priceless!!
Wish the network mapping was a little more accurate and could load a bit faster but other than that I'm impressed so far. Look forward to improved performance and features with future updates.
Useful but should be improved
While I find this app to be useful and practical, I can't help but think about the small nuances still in the app. Please update the app for larger screen compatibility, it's 2015 and the larger screen iPhones have been out for more than a year, so there's not really an excuse to fix this simple resizing issue. Second, the different features load quite slowly, maybe some improvements can fix that? Also, there are some parts that I'm not always familiar with such as "Access cont..." In network map. What does that do? I'm not too familiar with router tech so perhaps you can include a help or manual readings in the app. Overall a decent app but improvements are more than welcomed!
