News Now — Hourly newscast and the latest stories from NPR
By Simon King
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
News Now is a quick and easy way to hear the latest news from NPR.
This simple app creates a playlist of the most recent NPR audio stories, beginning with the hourly news. Playback automatically continues to the next story, or listeners can tap a headline and jump to a particular story.
• Starts automatically, just launch and listen.
• Jump to any point in a story by touching and dragging the playback bar.
• Remembers the stories you've heard and won't automatically play them again.
• Share with friends or open in Safari by pressing and holding on the selected story. (iOS6+)
News Now works great with AirPlay and is compatible with headphone playback controls and Control Center.
This app was built by an NPR member and is powered by the NPR API. The developer is not affiliated with NPR.
What's New in Version 2.10
New feature: when a story has been played it gets a checkmark and News Now won't automatically play it again. Checkmarks can be cleared in the Settings app.
Much easier to use than NPR's own apps
I use this app every single day and I love it. This elegant, nicely designed app makes it possible to do exactly what I want to do: hear NPR news. It doesn't clog up the app with things I don't need. It's a cleaner approach than NPR's own apps and as a bonus, it looks better, too.
I have been using News Now for 3 years and I still use it daily. Unlike NPR One, it lets me select stories and doesn't pad my experience with things I don't want.
The best NPR app
I've tried the official NPR apps and they're okay. But this one is great. You open it and it plays the news. Simple and exactly what I want.
Once the news is done, it starts playing features, with a list of features so you can skip around. The official apps mix in a lot of other stuff and require too much fiddling.
Needs an update
This is the app I use most frequently for NPR, and I like it because it's quick and simple. However, it hasn't been updated recently and now it brings up a warning each time you open the app saying it may slow your phone down. I also rated it lower due to the lack of customization options. What it does, it does well, but it's time for a few enhancements.
