What's New in Version 4.3.1
4.3.1: Fixed a bug that caused some users to see a black screen when restoring the app
- Summaries - in longer articles, you can now see an automatically-generated summary at the top of the story that tells you the gist of what's important. TL;DR no longer!
- There's now a better way to find new interests for your News360 account - just tap on 'Add Interests' in the menu screen.
- Many small bugs fixed
Former 5 star app loses rating
I used to love this news app. You can actually pick the topics you want to read about and they show up frequently which is great because you would otherwise never hear about those topics on other news apps. Like say Indie Rock or even more specifically artists like Grimes. However, when you dislike something hoping that it won't show up anymore, it still shows up infinite times more. I despise sports and sports talk so I disliked the sports category. Doesn't work. So I disliked the team names, didn't work. So I disliked the players names, didn't work. Now I have to dislike the city names the teams are playing in but then I don't get other news that is not sports related from that city. I think they have too many categories and it becomes virtually impossible to rid my " personalized" news paper of stories I don't care about because there are soooooooooo many subcategories. Your home feed allow you to choose categories you like, perhaps they should allow categories you don't like. I've had this app for two years and the app claims after time, it becomes personalized. With every single swipe to the left, another sports story. IMPOSSIBLE to get away from is nowhere near personalized in my opinion. I hope they fix this, great idea that has not worked well enough.
Best news app yet
I don't write a lot of reviews. I've been primarily using NPR (which I still use, mostly for radio) and Google news (which is my go-to on my desk/laptop but is unbearable because of the ads on my mobile devices). Very sad about Google news but it just got so frustrating losing the minutes here and there from unavoidable useless ads I needed to try something else to get my local and popular science news. This app, so far, has been it. It allows you to mute article types and sources you don't want to scroll through, and even choose specific things out of articles you like that you don't want to pop up later. I hope they don't change this because I will be strictly NPR if they do. But right now this is a grade A app. 4 stars because I feel like the user screen could be more customizable, and if it had NPRs material and audio, it would be the only one I use.
I'm happy to pay but, please don't start putting ads all over (like Google decided to): if you do I will cut you short QUICK. Thanks for the great app for now! Stay true!
I'm all for not burying myself in negativity 24/7, but come on. In the past five days there have been no less than SIX terrorist attacks overseas. One would think these attacks ought to at least be reported within the first few pages, but somewhere around fifty pages in I've seen not a single mention. What I have seen are nothing but fluff articles of no more than "share this on Facebook" caliber. Not one real "news" story. I was certainly expecting better than that. I haven't yet seen one single story worth my time to open.
I've upped my rating from one star to three, but stand by my above remarks because that's what I saw the first time I opened the app. First impressions are important. The developers need to work on this. It was not until I quit the app and reopened it that I was offered the opportunity to customize it. The ability to do so was there, but there was nothing apparent pointing me to how to do so. On the second opening I was brought directly to the preferences screen.
Now it seems the app is pretty decent, but it's just too soon for five stars. Will update sometime later.
