What's New

Version 3.5

Version 3.5

• NEW! LIGHTNING NOTIFICATIONS:
Be notified when lightning strikes nearby. Get a push notification whenever lightning strikes near your Saved Locations up to 10 miles away. Tap the 'Layers' icon in the bottom navigation menu, then tap the new 'Alerts' button at the top-left of the screen.

Note:
• At this time, Current Location is not supported by Lightning Notifications.
• An in-app purchase of $0.99/month is required for Lightning Notifications.
• You can still view Lightning strikes on the map without having to buy the Lightning Notifications subscription. To do so, tap the 'Layers' icon in the bottom navigation menu, then under the 'Layers' button at the top, scroll down to the 'Severe Weather Overlays' section where you can turn on or off the Lightning overlay on the map.

• NEW! LONG-TAP ON THE MAP:
You can now long-tap on the map to get current conditions and weather forecasts for any location in the United States. You can also choose to save this location right from the long-tap results display just by tapping the '+' icon. Long-tap makes it quick and easy to check a location's weather and add a new location to your Saved Locations just by tapping the map.

• NEW! CUSTOMIZE WEATHER LAYERS FOR SLOW CELLULAR CONNECTIONS:
A new Advanced setting lets you set the number of looping imagery frames to display for weather layers (such as radar) if you are on a slow cellular connection. Using less frames will help looping layers like radar display faster, but you won’t see as much imagery.

BUG FIXES:
• Three map legends were corrected for the Temperature weather layer, Water Temp weather layer, and Snow Cover weather layer. These three legends had some misaligned numbers relative to their color bar chart. These misaligned numbers caused confusion when interpreting the map legends according to what the associated weather layer was displaying on the map.

• Additional bug fixes and performance improvements are included in this release to resolve some minor and annoying app crash issues.

Good radar app

The only reason I bought this app was that I wanted to quickly look at precipitation/clouds covering and see where it was moving. It used to be perfect in his regard - I could use the little slider at the bottom to move time forth and back and get the idea very quickly. With the new version the slider is gone and it is only possible to start plying the time loop automatically. I miss the slider a lot!

On my iPhone 7 Plus the app itself seems to be working reasonably fast. I like the new layer settings - it's much nicer than it used to be. Plus, I like that now it is possible to select the combination of precipitation and clouds! As far as I remember, you could have one or the other before. However, this combination has a problem with animation - when I hit the play button it takes the whole loop to show the clouds/precipitation that move. The other layers work fine in this regard so it is only this combination that has the problem.

Developer Response

Thank you for your comments.

Starting with version 3.5 (released on 6/12/18), a new feature has been added that gives you more control over how much radar imagery gets displayed in the app when on a slow cellular connection.

Tap Settings > Advanced > and scroll down to the new 'Weather Layer Imagery Loops' section. We hope this Advanced feature helps improves the app experience for you.

PS: We also miss the Slider! The reason this was removed in version 3.x is because the weather provider and data that powered the old version was set to be (and has since been) discontinued at the end of 2017. As a result of that change, NOAA Hi-Def Radar for iOS had to either be rebuilt completely or discontinued as a product.

We made the decision to continue the product, and at the same time bring it up to modern iOS standards as the app had not been updated in quite a few years, which caused some technology challenges for both our users as mobile devices evolved and our own development teams having to maintain outdated technology. Unfortunately, some features of the old app, like the Slider, were not available from the new weather provider due to the technology and data source changes mentioned.

⚠️⚠️ PHONY RATINGS ALERT ⚠️⚠️

Shagwell mcgee

Do not buy the 4.6 rating that is currently listed for this app. I have no clue how an app jumps from 1 star to 4.6, but clearly there has been some more corruption coming from this highly crooked company. I recommended you sort the ratings by most recent and see what people are really saying.

This company STOLE a previous app that people had already paid for, and required them out of nowhere to pay a monthly fee for the features that they had already bought. As of today, this company has done nothing to refund money or return this app to its previous state. You are being warned, this company has shown no mercy when it comes to selling you one thing, and then updating it with something else. The .99 monthly subscription you agree to could jump up to 4.99 with no notice. Do not trust these scammers, they bait and switched people with a great app and then pushed this trash on to us, with no mercy shown for paying customers.

Thy are literally thieves, and how this app has not faced punishment for its crooked scheme is beyond me. This app is not 4.6 stars, 1 Star is more accurate.

Developer Response

While the following may not resolve your concerns, we'd like to clear up why such changes had to be made in the app. There is no 'bait and switch' going on. The weather provider and data that powered the old version was set to be (and has since been) discontinued at the end of 2017. You are correct that some features of the old app are no longer in the new app due to the technology and data source changes mentioned. The only optional features in the new version 3.x app that require a paid subscription are: 1) The 'Future Weather' option. This paid option unlocks 2 new features: the 'Future Radar' map layer (which displays forecasted radar imagery for the next few hours), and the 'Future Temperature’ map layer, both of which never existed in the old version 2.x of the app. 2) The new 'Lightning Alert Notifications' option starting with version 3.5 (released on 6/12/18). This paid option allows you to receive push notifications for saved locations when lightning strikes nearby. Lightning Alert Notifications never existed in the old version 2.x of the app. Conversely, the feature to display lightning strikes on the weather map did exist in the old version 2.x app, and still does exist in the new version 3.x app - there is no extra fee required to display lightning on the map. All other features in the new app which were in the old app do not require any additional payment. These include: displaying past radar imagery, current conditions, hourly/daily forecasts, lightning strikes on the map, storm tracks on the map, adding multiple saved locations, displaying current location (if user allows it), and displaying multiple severe weather alert layer types on the map. We hope this answers some of your concerns, and helps clarify the business and technology reasons why changes were made to the product, in order to keep the app alive. While we are aware there are differences in the new app, we are working to improve the app based on user feedback. We encourage you to reach out to our Customer Support team with any additional feedback, questions or problems with the app. They can be reached by sending a Support request from within the NOAA Hi-Def Radar app.

This not an opinion, it’s the truth. Rain alerts were a feature on the discontinued app. STOP LYING!!!!!!! There was lightning notifications on the previous version. I would know. I paid for those once already. Your responses proves my point. Copy and responses show disrespect to customers. Yours is full of lies. You have no respect and regard to current customers. Especially, the ones who had this app since it was created years ago. Asking for us to pay features we already paid for. Your responses mean nothing. They’re nothing but lies. Hiding behind the truth and blame. You people are pathetic liars. This is starting to seem like a typical money making scam. It’s time to take action against these corrupt developers. There is clear evidence of corruption and fraud. I do give 5 stars for your con artist and criminal ability. You might to check your terms and conditions. Before users look and review through them. This developer was not suppose to make the previous users pay again after all. Better be quick or face a lot more lawsuits.
