As the nation’s oldest and most respected provider of legal information for consumers and small businesses, Nolo now offers students, accountants, paralegals, and everyone whose work or life is touched by the law, a complete and up-to-date legal dictionary—designed for the palm of your hand.

Edited by a team of lawyers with expertise in all the vital areas of the law, Nolo’s Plain-English Law Dictionary contains nearly 4,000 legal terms defined in everyday, understandable language. You’ll find both the legal standards—Latin terms, courtroom jargon, contract basics—and newly minted terms that reflect the ever changing language of the law today. What does it mean to get “dooced”? Do you need that “pre-dup”? Had a run-in with a “patent troll” lately? Nolo is committed to finding and defining the latest twists in legal language that have entered our daily conversations—important words not found in other legal dictionaries. Nolo’s Plain-English Law Dictionary is both authoritative and friendly, but it is not your grandfather’s law dictionary.

Ratings and Reviews

Great for the legal novice; And still worthwhile for law students and those in the profession.

Nolo's "Plain English Law Dictionary" is exactly that: plain english. For students in undergrad taking courses in criminal justice, some sort of pre-law program, or who are just curious, this app provides simple definitions to any common terms or latin phrases you might need. The dictionary may also be extremely useful to people in business who can't always consult a lawyer for every contract they sign.

If you are a law student, however, this dictionary leaves something to be desired. The organization isn't what you would be used to, and it should not be relied on in a pinch because of some of the more esoteric terms that are conspicuously absent. While Nolo's is not Black's, it has one distinct advantage: it's free. If you're not willing to shell out the big bucks for a comprehensive law dictionary like Black's, this app does a great job, considering who its target audience is.

Too good to be free!

Disclaimer: For the record, I am not a lawyer and am not, nor ever have been, in law school, merely a person who watches too much Law & Order, so I can only review this app from the perspective of a layperson.

To echo the other reviews, I can't believe this app is free! I can attest that the definitions provided are very easy to understand even if you are a layperson. I recommended this app to my father, a C.P.A., who often needs to reference tax, estate, and business law and would recommend it to anyone else who needs to reference legal terms or definitions but is not acquainted with the intricacies of the legal system. I imagine this app could also be useful if party to a legal proceeding.

Nolo could easily charge upwards of $10 for this app, although I'm grateful that they didn't as I probably would not have purchased it if they did (as I have no real need for a law dictionary other than passing curiosity). So my suggestion to those who have even the slightest interest in legal terms: grab this app! (Another plus: it doesn't take up much space despite being an offline dictionary and it's ad free.)

One last thing, the way the alphabetical scroll functions is fantastic! I wish Apple had implemented it the same way in the iPod/Music app.

Quick, Easy, Slick

I'm a 30+ year attorney and needed a quick and easy law dictionary app. Here it is. You can't beat Nolo for their helpful legal info aimed at consumers and this app is a great example. I use Black's Law Dictionary in my office and have been wanting a law dictionary for my iphone since I bought my first iphone. Now, with the 3gs model, Nolo timed it perfectly. Just about every legal phrase you commonly need is defined here. And if you get tired of the Law & Order opening notes, you can shut them off and get straight to work. A great app, highly useful, especially for attorneys, and you just can't beat the (free) cost. Nolo scores again.
