Customer Reviews

Great Mix of Learning and Fun

My son Zachary enjoys playing 10-20 questions each night before bed, gives him something to look forward to. He almost always wins the computer (with a little help sometimes) but that's good that the computer wins once in a while so it doesn't feel rigged. We've only gotten to level 2 of age 5-6 but the content seems well organized so far. We also have Baggin' the Dragon and the games are very similar but the content is different so that you're not answering the same questions. It is worth getting both games if anyone has that question. Good Job EdAlive!

Fun family computer "board game" that teaches math

This game is basically the same concept as Numbers Up's Baggin' the Dragon. You can read my detailed review for that game as most of applies to this as well. If you are considering getting either this or Baggin' the Dragon, get this game. Many of the questions in both games are the same. Game play is similar, you roll dice, move around a game board and answer questions to win points and collect fuel before the volcano blows. Like Baggin' the Dragon, the questions presented to the player are determined by the player's age, allowing different ages to play and compete together, which is the the best feature of these games. Volcanic Panic, however, adds additional features that make game play in Volcanic Panic more competitive than Baggin' the Dragon and also keep it more interesting. Volcanic Panic adds an equipment store where you can purchase different items with collected points. Some or one-time use items, others have permanent effects. They can be used to increase your moves, increase points collected, get out of jail free, steal items from other players, switch positions with other players, etc. This makes the game more engaging than Baggin' the Dragon. While my son and I like the fantasy theme of Baggin the Dragon better than the Escape-the-Island theme of Volcanic Panic, we enjoy the game play of Volcanic Panic more. Baggin the Dragon gets old after a while. Volcanic Panic injects at least a little bit of strategy into the game.

In short I recommend that:
if you have neither game, get Volcanic Panic.
if you have Baggin the Dragon, you might want to "upgrade" to Volcanic Panic to continue to benefit from the practice math problems by keeping things fresh and bringing new strategic elements to the game play.
If you have Volcanic Panic, I see no point in buying Baggin the Dragon unless you really want to play the same game, with fewer features, but with a fantasy theme.
