Looks Nice - Little Substance/Content

I've tried several versions of the NYT iOS apps, and this is the best so far. When you click on a Times story on the main page of the app, you are taken to a very readable, nicely presented article. That's the good. The problem is I'm not sure of the purpose of the app or why, even if it is free, I'd use it. It's not a river or feed of all the content in the Times (i.e., on their website) or even very much of it. With just a little bit of scrolling, you reach the end, where it says "that's it, check back later for more news." Really, no more news than just the few things presented? Plus, many of the stories are not even Times stories, but rather links to things like Slate articles. Well, maybe you can personalize what types of stories you'd like to see? Nope, no personalization settings. So, in summary, not much Times content and zero personalization. Finally, there's an awful lot of wasted space on the main scroll. Lots of app guidance, and lots of white space. Takes a lot of scrolling to see what's there. All-in-all, looks nice, but really, what's the point? Not compelling. Needs much more Times content, presented in a readily scannable manner, as well as personalization, so you're not wasting the readers time with stuff she/he is not interested in.

Perfect way to keep up with the news

The New York Times did a really good job with this app. It's a great, digestible way to peruse the Times' massive selection of articles every day.

What makes the app really special is that there's some editorial voice -- instead of a list of stories, the two sentence summaries and titles ahead of stories provide context beyond the headline.

I have a full Times subscription but NYT Now is so perfect for reading on my phone that I use it all the time over the full Newsstand app. I find that I read more articles thanks to the app that I'd probably never check out otherwise.

Unfortunately, since the app has gone free, the amount of content in the app is lacking. There just aren't enough Times articles.

The app feels like a buddy waiting to tell me the important and interesting news every morning and evening on the way to and from work. Great way to keep informed. I just wish that the articles recommended from other outlets were cached so I could read them too without a data connection.

Great app, but...

I subscribe to NYT and actually prefer the news reading experience in this app so much that I use it more than the regular NYT app. It is much more visual, and the curated news selections add a huge amount to what NYT provides on its own. The problem I have is that I'm paying for NYT, but now an app I actually prefer to read the same news in is free. Unless you start delving into the section details and reading the whole paper it is not clear that this app overall is any worse than the regular NYT app. I'd like to see the main app updated similarly.
