What's New in Version 2.7.1
# TV Play!
- You can now use AirPlay to stream your crossword puzzle to your Apple TV - harness the collective knowledge of your friends and family to collaboratively solve the toughest puzzles! Just swipe up from the bottom of the app for the iOS Control Center, select AirPlay and follow the instructions to get started.
- If you've signed up to be notified when the new daily puzzle is available, you'll begin to receive those notifications; we’ve also added the ability to manage those notifications within the settings screen.
- We crushed several other bugs. Thanks for your feedback!
# Fun Facts
- The most used word in the paper’s puzzle? “ERA” appears in about 5.9% of all crossword puzzles in The New York Times.
- Learn to speak crosswordese: NENE - a Hawaiian goose (which just happens to be the state bird).
It's been a long slow process
But this app has finally gotten back to a stable usable state since NYT took it over from Magmic and initially screwed it up terribly. It was really buggy with inexplicably missing features for a long time but it is finally back in a reliable state with most of the old features restored (are leaderboards ever coming back though?). If you had given up on it before (as I almost did), now would be a good time to come back.
The only thing I will say....the subscription is still crazy expensive after having gone from $16/year to $40/year a year and a half ago. The monthly subscription (which gets you one daily regular crossword and one worthless daily mini crossword) is $6.99 a month. In terms of entertainment value it's a little nuts that you can, for example, get a monthly Netflix subscription to thousands of hours of streaming video for almost the same cost as a subscription to a single daily crossword puzzle. I assume they are just counting on the fact that their subscribers will be as addicted as I admit I am, but it's still a pretty ridiculous pricing model.
Great, but for a few faults
Several months ago a puzzle required the quotation mark symbol, which isn't on the keyboard and no substitute (such as a double apostrophe) worked. It'd be nice if all necessary characters were on the keyboard, or if they'd at least offer some substitute. Without it, your winning streak is ruined.
Also, the stats screen needs to be fixed. Monday is on the far left and Sunday on the right, like a business calendar week. But when you finish a Sunday puzzle, that week's stats don't appear. I suspect the programming still thinks of Sunday as the start of a week, and thus doesn't think of the current Sunday as part of this week.
Update removes "free" access!
This app is a wonderful way to do the NYTimes crossword. I'd rather solve it on my iPad than on paper, and I appreciate the ability to download puzzles so that you can work offline.
Note that the most recent update removes free access. Before I was able to keep playing even after my subscription ended. I don't blame them for "fixing" this, and I think $40/year is reasonable (since I play every day). But I thought folks would want to know about this change. :-)
