Customer Reviews

The Nation's Newspaper, with Video and Sound

I'm no expert on how apps should be designed. But I know that the New York Times is one of the best newspapers in the world. This app gives you access to the parts of the Times you want to read: politics, crime, cultural analysis, columnists, food, movies, etc. There are also brief (and some not-so-brief) videos that add richness.

For a long time, I wasn't willing to pay for access to the New York Times. I would read a few articles a month, and quit before they cut me off. Finally I gave in, taking advantage of the discount available to educators. I've relished it ever since.

Missing NYT Now

I'm seeing a lot of positive reviews but I'm unimpressed. I was an avid NYT Now user and was sad to see it go. I'm missing a lot of the polish and care I saw in the tailored NYT Now feed. On top of that there are minor experience issues that are killing it for me. For example I click a NYT breaking news notification and it doesn't bring me to that specific article... why.

That being said I don't know of anything better and will continue to use the app and look forward to further improvements.

The future of media?

The Times app has evolved from a compliment to my physical newspaper to a replacement. It combines current news and readily searchable archives of older articles. Advertising isn't intrusive. It's a great application, my primary question is will the economics of the app without print allow the times to maintain its production and editorial standards? A question for another day. But the app is wonderful!
