Oblique Strategies is a concept developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt to help artists overcome creative block through lateral thinking. It consists of a deck of cards, each one containing a vague or ambiguous phrase which can be used to solve a problem intuitively, by breaking conventional thinking patterns and interpreting it from a new perspective.
This app aims to translate the essence of the original cards deck into a digital experience, making it accessible to a wider audience. It contains the original edition, as well as the more newly developed ones, presenting them in a sleek minimalist style, inspired by the original design of the cards. The user interface is simple and straightforward and does not distract from the creative process: you can tap or shake to see a new card or swipe for settings.
New and improved user interface design - now clearer and easier to use.
New display option added: switch off text flickering (based on our user suggestions).
Now compatible with the latest Apple devices and software.

Best Version of Oblique Strategies!
Updated review: This app provides access to versions 1-4 of Oblique Strategies, and credits the original authors, which other apps don’t do (there may be a 5th version of this deck out by now?). The annoying card shuffle feature upon opening the app has been effectively dealt with by providing a setting to disable it. One enhancement I’d like to see in the next update would be to have the app open to a landing page rather than instantly selecting a card (e.g., “Welcome to Oblique Strategies; Tap Screen To Select Card or To Proceed”). This would allow users to put themselves into the right frame of mind prior to selecting a card.
Great app! Thanks to developer for dealing with card shuffling issue. 🙂
Thank you for your review.
I just wanted to tell you that that the version 2.1 was just approved and now you can disable the shuffle effect from the settings.
Have a great, creative day!
This app is mostly great. My primary complaint is the flashing/shuffle effect between cards (after you tap or shake to pick another card, maybe a dozen or so other cards flash by in quick succession before the next one is presented), which I don't understand or enjoy. Also, it's not quiet clear how to dismiss the config/tool menu, but if you tap enough times it disappears.
Thank you so much for your review.
Just wanted to tell you that a new version it is available in store and yes, you can now disable the shuffle effect from settings.
The settings window have now a button to dismiss and also the old method (swipe to dismiss) still works.
Have a great day! and thanks again for your review
The best Oblique Strategies app!
I was surprised to see several Oblique Strategies apps in the store, and after trying them all I can say unequivocally that this is the best of the group - it offers the ability to switch between any combination of the four extant editions, it looks good, and it credits Eno and Peter Schmidt (which the others do not do).
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
