Oilist: the Artist in your pocket.
Make Fine Art based on your pictures!

"Oilist is an artist in your phone, one that you watch sketch, paint, and craft a unique version of a photo you’ve shot." - MacStories, May 2017

"App of the week: Oilist review - Hypnotic, engaging, with a longevity that escapes most filter apps, and with high-res output so you can use it to create real-world art." - Stuff Magazine, April 2017

Give Oilist an image, and it will automatically generate a genuine and unique work of art based on it. Painted for you in real time! Participate or spectate it's up to you, Oilist will delight! All saved at canvas-worthy 4k resolution.

Oilist comes with 48 infinitely customizable styles; from photo-realist to impressionist, to abstract. Every style except for our photo-realist style offers three different levels of abstraction.

Oilist is not a photo filter. Unlike most filter apps, Oilist will never generate the same results twice, and in fact, each brush stroke is unique. Instead of applying a fixed formula to an image as photo filters typically do, Oilist analyzes the supplied image using computer vision technology, then paints simulated paint particles that are applied using various brush strokes and techniques.

At any time during the painting process, 4k resolution images may be captured as often as desired.

When Oilist is painting, styles can be infinitely customized with 17 different presets (these were called Styles in previous versions of Oilist), 13 different painting moods, 15 different brushes, setting brush options such as the size and spacing, and by splashing paint with our exciting Chaos tool. Control paint gravity by tilting your device and brush angles by yawing (rotating) the device.

Obtain new and exciting results by alternating settings with new settings painted on top of the previous settings. For instance, first, paint a layer using the Warm mood followed by a layer using the Cool mood. The use of large brushes tend to create more abstract artwork, and smaller brushes work best for high definition detail.

Oilist will automatically provide smaller brush strokes and greater photo-realism to detected faces.

Amazing, addictive, beautiful technology

Oilist is the best photo-to-painting app I have tried, and one of the most addictive iPad “games” ever. I spent the last two weeks on a business trip to Singapore and China where I was constantly looking for iPhone photo subjects to process with Oilist. Interesting photos make for the most interesting paintings but with the right composition and colors, Oilist can reveal beauty in the most mundane of subjects. A block of high-rise apartments becomes a colorful abstract scene. A statue in a park yields an emotional portrait. Even the preset styles provide constant surprises, and if you experiment with the settings, a photo can become... anything. This is a fantastic application of neural network technology used to “learn” the styles of various artists from their paintings, but the ability to control and mix so many different settings and the interactive user interface make this so much more than a photo filter app. Whether or not you consider the final results to be “art,” the process is certainly creative and satisfying. This app helps me look at the world with new eyes — and isn’t that what art is supposed to do?

Great App, minor fix needed

I love the app., but it could be tweaked a bit to make it easier to understand what each of the settings will give you (or provide some help/info),...and it may just be me, since I am not a painter. The main issue, is when I am creating a painting, the brightness of my phone slightly dims automatically. I check my brightness and it is still set to full brightness. I know it’s the App because after I finish the design and exit out, it comes back to full brightness. Otherwise, as I said, I love this App, so thank you!

Kind of pointless advertising full res output, when only input is garbage.

So not a creative app, just a way to randomly turn photos into scrambled junk. Cannot imagine why there’s no way to step through the editing process manually, as the constant randomly shifting process really is only going to appeal to children.

Not creative, not fun, it’s like riding in the backseat with your parents driving you somewhere you almost certainly don’t want to go. It’s terrible.

Please please tell me I’ve missed something and there is a way to edit manually instead of this godawful slow growth random junk.... I’d love to eat crow on this review.
